A Narrative Study on Cambodian Migrant Workers' Competency Acquisition in Korea

The flow of unskilled workers from developing to developed countries is a critical trend regarding seeking high wages. The aim of this study is to explore the migrant workers’ competencies possessed from living and working in both origin and host countries in order to apply in the real-world setting for successful career after terminating the labor contract. The narrative inquiry was used to identify seven overarching themes emerged from data using an inductive approach, consisting of gratitude and devotion, getting along with people, hardworking and endurance, a sense of further studies, running own businesses, conflicting technical skills acquisition, and family living condition betterment. The findings concluded that public campaigns should be promoted to raise both employers and migrant workers’ awareness of South Korean labor-related law along with the strict labor law enforcement and attentions to migrant workers’ rights for migrant workers to acquire fruitful technical skills.
