The expansion tube is widely used as the module type crash energy absorber, especially in the railroad industry. The feature of the expansion tube is characterized by uniform load level during compression in the longitudinal direction because the crash energy is absorbed by means of expanding the tube in the radial direction. Since the uniform load remains in sudden impact load, the expansion tube is effective to decrease acceleration of passengers when the train accident occur. The expansion tube should not be buckled under the any loads in the longitudinal direction during absorbing the crash energy.
The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate the possibility of the failures like as tearing, buckling, friction problem and other problems of the expansion tube under static compression by using the static experiment. Since the HSS(High Strength Steel) is rarely affected by the strain rate, we can evaluate the characteristics of HSS(High Strength Steel) under the high velocity by using the steady state test. Several materials are selected as the tube materials, and then perform the static compression test by using the UTM(Universal Test Machine) to get the each material's characteristics under the static state.
