This study reviews the concept of interdisciplinary art emerging as the governmental business for the purpose of supporting Korea cultures and arts in 2006. Also, both the characteristics and current situation of interdisciplinary art will be addressed, based on artistic and social backgrounds through analyzing interdisciplinary art in the field of Korean culture and art. In addition, given that the concept of interdisciplinary art includes various flows of contemporary arts, this study will suggest strategies for the activation of interdisciplinary art in order to help establish it more efficiently in Korea culture and art.
In all areas of contemporary Korean culture and art, there has been a noticeable to change in formal arts, such as cross-over, experimental, and future-forward style, and also changes of internal values for the population of non-mainstreamers, minorities, and people in indie or sub-groups since the last decade. Although there have been continuous trials for the establishment of new styles and modes since post modernism, it has been hard to actualize the acceptance of an overall phenomenon surrounding these contemporary arts.
The trails to overcome the above mentioned limitations have fortunately begun to be actualized more intensely by the government and leading businesses in South Korea. These businesses have created new titles to reflect the continuously changing art environment since it began as the experimental art support business in 1997. In 2002, the Korean Culture and Art Foundation, which is now called the Arts Council Korea, changed the name of its business supporting the policy for a new artistic phenomenon to 'the pluralistic art support business'. With the appearance of the concept of interdisciplinary art, the business of the government has faced a new situation regarding arts since 2006. In order to overcome the limitation of the government- leading art policies and businesses, the Arts Council Korea shows active movements by directly accepting new art phenomenons, executing specific and realistic programs reflecting the phenomenon, and establishing 'Dao space' to facilitate the activation of an interdisciplinary art division.
In this respect, this study analyzed the phenomenon of Korean interdisciplinary art, focusing on the alteration of the government-leading businesses. This study selected Seoul Fringe Network as the interdisciplinary art-related private organization and compared it with the government-leading business through intensively analyzing the network. In terms of a method, this study focused on interviews with professionals and influential people in the field of arts rather than depending only on existing data, given that there was lack of data regarding interdisciplinary art in South Korea. Furthermore, this study included various opinions as well as objective data through the above mentioned method. Based on the limitations and considerations revealed through the analysis of Korean interdisciplinary art, this study suggests the following strategies for the activation of interdisciplinary art.
First of all, it is necessary to establish a theoretical foundation of interdisciplinary art. In addition, the development of Korean interdisciplinary art may be maximized when the government's support and private support collaborate. In other words, the active investment of the government on the aspect of hardware is required, which means building and expanding a physical foundation. Thus, it is required that specialized private organizations increase their abilities to activate the interdisciplinary art-related programs through various aspects of software. To do the expansion of interdisciplinary art areas through development of various programs, facilitating the development of new styles in interdisciplinary art, and having financial independence should also be considered.
With the transition of decades, there have been continuous interactions between the social environment and its social, cultural, and philosophical factors. From these interactions, a new artistic concept which is called interdisciplinary art has appeared. However, this concept has yet to be well established in South Korea. Therefore, there should be further studies regarding interdisciplinary art.
