<AbsText> MERSEA ISLAND, lying between the estuaries of the rivers Colne and Blackwater, is comparatively high ground, but on all sides the surrounding country is dead level. To the east, north, and west lies an interminable waste of marshlands and saltings, intersected by winding tideways and creeks, the chosen haunt of the wigeon and the mallard, the curlew and the redshank. To the south is the open sea, and across the Blackwater the long, low line of the Bradwell sea wall, outside of which lies the vast stretch of the Dengie Flats and St. Peter's Sands. </AbsText>
