The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of local professional sport teams on elementary school students’ sports values perspective and sports participation . Therefore, in order to achieve the goal of this study, this research set question regarding whether there were any meaningful differences between the students living in a city with professional sports teams and the students living in a place without a professional sports teams.
The research questions were :
First, local professional sports team will affect elementary school students’ perspective on sports values.
Second, local professional sports team will affect elementary school students’ participation in sports
To investigate these questions, research was conducted on 610 sixth grade children who live in the Seoul, an area with professional sports teams and 507 sixth grade children who live in the Gapyeong-gun, Yangpyeong-gun, Yeoncheon-gun, an area without professional sports teams.
The results are as follows :
Firstly, local professional sports teams were found to have a significant effect on elementary student’s sports values perspective(p<.001). Particularly, the students living in areas with professional sports teams had higher physical, economic, sociable, aesthetic and personal value perspective than the other group, and received meaningful results(p<.01). they also received marginally higher entertaining value perspective than other group, but the results were not meaningful.
Secondly, First, local professional sports teams were found to have a significant effect on student’s sports participation(p<.001). In particular, the students living with professional sports teams had higher dynamic, cognitive and emotional participation than the other group(p<.01).
In conclusion, local professional sports teams make students sociable and make them perceive sports as having positive effects on physical development. It also allows students to recognise the aesthetic of sports and know that they can do economic activities through sports. On the other side, professional sports team didn’t have significant influence on entertaining sport values perspective. This means that professional sports team have little impact on elementary students in terms of entertainment and play. This is Because the sports themselves have the value of entertaining.
Furthermore, local professional sports teams influence dynamic, cognitive and emotional participation. Students strive to acquire knowledge on sports rules, strategies, events and athletes based on their interest in professional sports teams. Also, it can encourage them to participate sport indirectly by watching professional sports games or they can participate directly. In this process, they will play sports with courtesy based on sportsmanship, learn attitude to respect judgement and dream about becoming interested in the player they like.
Local professional sports teams are influencing a variety of areas. This study suggests that if the local professional sports team is created and activated in various regions, the elementary students will be able to participate in sports continuously with the right sports values and the ability to establish a framework to become a lifelong sports.
