      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Kang-Hee Lee. 2017. Superdiversity and ELF communication. Korean Journal of English Language and Linguistics 17-3, 477-496. Diversity is one of today's sociocultural and linguistic features in English as a lingua franca (ELF). The growing mobility and language contact have accelerated and intensified the level of diversity, which is called superdiversity. Superdiversity has led to a higher degree of unpredictability and uncertainty in the new social environments. ELF is superdiverse in terms of not only speakers' different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, linguistic repertoires, language attitude and identity but also domains of use and contexts of communication. By reviewing the notion of superdiversty as a growing sociolinguistic phenomenon and a range of multilingual strategies such as languaging, code-switching, and translanguaging, this study will explore the nature of ELF as a multilingual phenomenon and the relationship between superdiversity and ELF within multilingualism. It is expected to provide the insight into the nature of communication and the understanding of language in itself, in which the transformation from monolingualism to multilingualism has occurred and the notion of language is no longer viewed as a fixed, bounded and uniform entity. The study will also provide some pedagogical implications for ELT, drawing on the notion of multi-competence.
