벤야민의 이름으로 : 반(反)폭력과 비폭력의 토포스 = In Benjamin’s name: The Tópos of Counter-Violence and Nonviolence

This essay aims to establish ‘nonviolence’ as the ultimate criticism of violence in contemporary discourse, given the absence of viable alternative approaches and the emergence of a new paradigm of violence in the 21st century. To achieve this, the essay draws upon the idea of three influential thinkers on violence : Étienne Balibar, Walter Benjamin, and Judith Butler. Balibar, a Marxist theorist proposes a politics of ‘counter-violence’ or ‘politics of civility’ as a realistic alternative to the binary opposition of violence and nonviolence. Benjamin and Butler seek to transcend the world of violence through the practical power of ‘nonviolence’ which is neither oppositional violence nor counter-violence. The politics of nonviolence proposed in this essay avoids blind pacifism and ineffective peace activitism, and rejects discources that manipulate a nonviolence as a principle without demonstrating its efficacy as a means. Instead, the theory of ‘contentious nonviolence’ opposes violence while providing effective theoretical guidance to critique the pathologized fear of violence and the disengaged nonviolence based on negative affirmation. The main argument of this essay is that contentious nonviolence can prevent the potential regression into another form of violence while offering valid theoretical guidance to criticize the unproductive and uncritical stance of nonviolence due to pathological fear of violence.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 21세기 폭력의 새로운 패러다임과 이에 대한 대안 부재적 상황을 전제로 폭력에 관한 종래의 세 가지 담론들, 즉 대항 폭력, 반폭력, 그리고 비폭력 사이에서 ‘비폭력’에 대한 새로운 성찰을 통해 폭력을 둘러싼 담론장 내에 비폭력을 폭력비판의 최종심급으로 자리 지정하기 위한 시도다. 이를 위해 이 글은 에띠엔 발리바르(É. Balibar), 발터 벤야민(W. Benjamin), 주디스 버틀러(J. Butler)라는 세 사상가의 폭력 담론을 경유한다. 마르크스주의 이론가 발리바르가 대항 폭력과 비폭력 사이에서 ‘폭력에 반대’하는 ‘반폭력의 정치’ 또는 ‘시민다움(civilité)의 정치’ 를 폭력에 대한 현실적 대안으로 제시하는 데 그친 반면, 벤야민과 버틀러는 대항 폭력도 반폭력도 아닌 ‘비폭력’에서 폭력의 세계를 돌파할 수 있는 실천적 힘을 찾고 있다고 보기 때문이다. 이 글이 제안하려는 비폭력의 정치는 맹목적 박애주의의 실천이나 무능한 평화주의에의 요구와 일정한 거리를 둘 뿐만 아니라, 원칙으로서의 비폭력주의는 인정하되, 그 수단의 효율성이 입증될 수 없기에 불가능한 당위적 요구로 비폭력주의를 호도하는 기존의 담론과도 단절한다. 쟁투적 비폭력주의는 폭력에 반대하면서도 또 다른 폭력으로 회귀할 위험성을 미리 차단할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 폭력에 대한 병적 포비아 때문에 탈맥락적인 비폭력주의가 갖는 부정의한 현실 인준적 태도 또한 비판할 수 있는 유효한 이론적 지침을 마련해 준다는 것이 이 글의 주장이다.
