The purpose of this study is to suggest the way of improvement for the existing street system in multi-family housing estates. It focuses 1) the assessment methods of existing street system using computer programs, 2) the planning methods of the street system through case study and survey in multi-family housing estates. The results of this study are summarizing below First, a significant correlation relationship between spatial configuration and space usage were found by Space Syntax model which is known to objective and quantitative planning methods. The model would enable researcher & planner to prodict pedestrian movement and pattern, and arrange the public facilities and spaces in multi-family housing planning. Second, The pedestrian streets perfectly separated from main roadways in multi-family housing estates was used by only few pedestrians and created potential crime problem. Thus it is necessary to build the coexistence with pedestrian and vehicles of street system. "Community Life Road" is a coexistence street system. It prevents people from danger situation at night and provides delightful circumstance to the inhabitant in multi-family housing estates. 21 detail suggestions for better street system are described through the survey of 35 diffemt multi-family housing estates. Third, 80 detail plans for the improvement of actual planning methods are described and it classfied 29 groups. The detail plans & groups suggest desirable planning methods for existing street system for multi-family housing estates. It is recommended cooperate with researchers and actual field designer in order to improve the quailty of existing street system and propose sample project.
