책거리 그림의 분화·확장을 통한 전통 기물의 현대적 해석 : 연구자의 작품을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 연구자의 작품을 중심으로 한 책거리 그림에서 분화 확장된 전통 기물의 현대적 해석에 관한 연구이다. 여러 전통 기물 중 전통 목가구를 중심으로 조각보와 매듭 등을 매치해 역사의 주변부로 위치 지워진 여성들의 서사를 드러내고자 하였다. 한국의 전통 목가구는 찬물에 세수하고 정면을 응시하며 꼿꼿하게 앉아있는 올곧은 조선 선비의 초상을 닮았다. 그런가 하면 한없이 넉넉한 어머니의 품처럼 유연한 아름다움까지 지니고 있다. 장인의 숙련된 솜씨와 안목으로 빚어진 간결한 선과 섬세한 면 분할에서 느껴지는 빼어난 비례미, 나뭇결무늬의 자연미를 살린 소박함과 단순함에서 오는 깊은 멋은 오랜 세월을 건너뛰어 오늘날까지 우리에게 큰 울림을 주고 있다.
조선 사회에서 여성이라는 이유로 제한되었던 내면의 지적 갈망을 표현하기 위하여 책거리 그림 속의 기물 중 먼저 책장과 경상을 꺼내어 여성의 사유의 방을 만들어 드러내고자 하였다. 나아가 안방 가구와 주방의 찬장으로까지 소재를 분화 확장하여 전개하였다. 전통적으로 여성들이 전담하여 제작한 조각보와 매듭 등은 여성성을 더 또렷이 부각하려는 장치였다.
책과 함께 다양한 기물이 그려져 있는 책거리는 18세기부터 20세기 초반까지 궁중장식화와 민화의 소재로 크게 유행하였다. 본 연구자는 본인의 작품연구에 앞서 이러한 전통 책거리 그림의 기원과 그 역사적 기록들을 정리해서 검토하고 모사와 방작을 통한 학습 과정을 제시하였다. 이는 필자의 작품 탄생에 대한 이해를 돕기 위한 선행과정으로써 의미를 지닌다.
비단과 모시, 무명 등의 바탕재는 여성성을 드러내는 하나의 표현 수단이었다. 예술가에게 조형 표현의 매개가 되는 재료는 물질적인 개념 이상의 상징적인 의미도 지닌다. 필자에 의해 선택된 바탕재는 작가의 개념을 은유적으로 표현하는 통로로써 예술작품이 사유적 목표에 도달하기 위한 중요한 조건이 되어 주었다.
현대예술은 장르의 경계가 허물어지고 작품을 표현하기 위한 도구로써 다양한 매체를 사용하고 있다. 필자 또한 평면 회화에서 오브제를 활용한 입체 회화와 더 나아가 공간 속에서 재료와 빛의 성질을 이용한 설치작업까지 다양한 작품을 선보였다. 재료의 물성을 고려해 빛을 비추어주니 재료 고유의 성질이 조형적 특성으로 전환되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 통해 관람자는 열린 공간에 놓이게 되는 효과가 발생하였다.
책가도가 놓였을 남성 중심의 조선 사회 선비의 서재로부터 갖고 싶지만 가질 수 없었던 여성의 ‘사유의 방’을 만들기 위해 일차적으로 고민했던 바탕재와 재료의 특성을 살린 전시기획의 효과로 인해 확장된 경험을 하게 되었다. 이는 다음 작업 활동의 든든한 기반으로써 연구자에게 전진할 수 있는 폭넓은 시야를 제공해 주었다.

This paper is a study on the contemporary interpretation of traditional objects that have been diversified and expanded through Chaekgeori paintings, centering on the works of the researcher. Emphasis was placed on such traditional objects as wooden furniture, patchwork wrapping cloth (jogakbo), and knots to reveal the narratives of women who have been marginalized throughout history. Traditional Korean wooden furniture conveys the image of an upright Joseon scholar, who washes his face with cold water and sits upright, gazing straight ahead. At the same time, this furniture possesses a fluid beauty akin to the infinitely generous embrace of a mother. The exquisite sense of proportion is perceived in the simple lines and the delicate division of surfaces, crafted with the masterful touch and discerning eye of the artisan. Additionally, the deep elegance emanating from the modesty and simplicity that enhance the natural beauty of the wood grain patterns continues to deeply resonate with present-day observers, transcending the long passage of time..
To express the inner intellectual longing that was suppressed merely because they were women living in Joseon society, the researcher first selected bookshelves and gyeongsang from the objects depicted in Chaekgeori paintings to create and manifest a room used for women’s contemplation. Furthermore, the materials were diversified and expanded to include furniture from inner rooms, in addition to cabinets from kitchens, to further develop the theme. Traditional items such as wrapping cloth (jogakbo) and knots, which were exclusively created by women, were used as devices to highlight the femininity emanating from these objects more clearly.
Chaekgeori, which depicts various objects together with books, was highly popular as a subject in court decorative paintings and folk paintings from the 18th century to the early 20th century. Before delving into the study of her own works, the researcher organized and reviewed the origins and historical records of these traditional Chaekgeori paintings. Then a learning process that involved both copying and recreating these artworks was presented. This preliminary process holds significance in facilitating an understanding of the creation of the researcher’s own artworks.
Matrices such as silk, ramie, and cotton served as one of the means of expressing femininity. For artists, the materials that serve as a medium for aesthetic expression hold symbolic meanings beyond their physical properties. The matrices chosen by the researcher became essential elements in enabling the artwork to reach its contemplative objectives, serving as a conduit for metaphorically expressing the artist’s concepts.
In contemporary art, the boundaries between genres have blurred and a variety of media are used as tools for expressing artworks. The researcher has also presented a wide range of works, including both two-dimensional and three-dimensional paintings utilizing objects, as well as installations that leverage the properties of materials and light within a space. Through considering the physical properties of the materials and illuminating them, it was observed that the inherent properties of the materials were transformed into sculptural characteristics. This, in turn, created an effect where the viewer experienced being in an open place.
From the scholar’s study of the male-centered society in Joseon, where Chaekado (paintings of books and scholar’s implements) were prevalent, the researcher aimed to create a “room for contemplation” for women who desired such a space but could not obtain it. The initial considerations of the matrices and the effectiveness of the exhibition design that utilized the properties of the materials developed into an expanded experience. Serving as a solid foundation for future work activities, this work provided the researcher with a broad perspective for further advancement.
