서양철학에서 본 공공성 = Publicness in the Western Philosophy

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 서양철학에서 각 시대와 사상가에 따라 다르게 사고되고 규정되어 온 `공공성`(publicness)의 개념을 파악하는데 목적이 있다. 근대 이후 서양의 공공성 개념은 시민의 권리와 역할에 중심을 두면서 비종교화 되었다. 그러나 최근에 다시 시민사회에서 도덕적이고 종교적인 믿음이 공공성에서 차지하는 비중을 다시 인정하게 되었다. 필자는 서양철학에서의 공공성 개념을 국가를 형성하는 시민의 정체성 문제에 초점을 맞추어 논의할 것이다. 이 글은 세 단계로 구성되어 있다. 첫 단계에서는 공공성을 어원적으로 고찰해 봄으로써 공공성이라는 용어의 의미를 파악할 것이다. 폴리스(polis), 퍼블릭(public), 시빅(civic) 이라는 세 단어의 어원을 살펴봄으로써 서양의 공공성 개념이 담고 있는 일반적 의미에 접근해 보고자 한다. 둘째 단계에서는 서양철학사를 통해 나타났던 공공성에 대한 여러 가지 생각과 주장을 역사적으로 몇 가지 유형으로 분류하면서 공공성에 대한 서양철학 전반의 흐름을 이해하고자 한다. 이러한 유형론적 분석은 다양성의 희석이라는 단점도 있지만, 체계적 파악으로 나아가는 길을 열어 주기도 한다. 셋째 단계에서는 20세기 후반의 현대 정치철학에서 논의되었던 공공성에 대한 담론을 자유주의, 공동체주의, 사회비판주의의 순서로 정리할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article aims to elucidate the concept of the publicness in the western philosophy. Since modern times it has been understood as the rights and role of the citizen. I define it the identity of the citizen which constitutes a state. In this article l will deal with three questions. First, what could be took through the etymological study of words on the concept of the publicness? Three words-polis, public, civic-would open the historical background and original meaning of these. Second, How many types of this concept make an appearance in the history of the western philosophy? Such a typology could help a systematic understanding of the concept of the publicness. Third, how could be discussed three major theories-Liberalism, Communitarianism, Critical Theory" My conclusion is that the publicness become a more important concept in the modern society.
