Debates within academia regarding the initial capital of Goguryeo remain unresolved. This paper seeks to explore the early capital location of the Gyeru royal family, considering the replacement of Goguryeo royal family and relocation of the capital. The first capital of Goguryeo, Jolbon, corresponds to the present-day Huanren region. It is believed that the capital moved to the Jian area before the invasion by Guanqiu jian, with the relocation estimated to have occurred between the throne of King Taejo and his 55th year(107 CE). Although several recent studies say that the early relocation of Goguryeo’s capital is related to the transition from the Sono to the Gyeru royal family, these arguments are difficult to prove because they do not fully explain the founding myths created by the Gyeru or the worship of the previous kings. From the perspective of Gyeru group, the founding myths expresses the replacement of the royal family from Sono to Gyeru, and it is said that the founding of Gogu ryeo occurred around 37 BCE. It is thus inferred that the Sono group played a leading role in the relationship between Goguryeo and the Han Dynasty during the establishment of the Xuantu Commandery. Although initially amicable, the relationship between Goguryeo and Xuantu Commandery deteriorated, leading to the installation of Chaekguru by the Han Dynasty. The reason why Goguryeo’s foreign policy changed like this was because the royal family of Goguryeo changed from Sono to Gyeru. The early base of the Gyeru group royal family likely resided in the Huanren Goryeomyojachon, with Wunu Mountain Fortress later designated as the capital site due to its symbolic landscape within the Jolbon region. And it is reasonable to judge that Sono group’s base was located in an area extending eastward from the Bui River area toward Tonghua.
