THE year 1829 was a memorable one for Mendelssohn, as he then visited England for the first time. He arrived in London in April, and at the close of the season, he, in company with his friend Klingemann, made a tour in Scotland, to which we owe the "Hebrides" Overture and the "Scotch" Symphony. At Liverpool, on the southward journey, Klingemann had to return to his duties in London, and Mendelssohn was then left alone.
