      In the modern era, male Chinese Buddhist leaders encouraged Buddhist women to practice and learn Buddhism. Illiteracy and moral corruption of Buddhist women were regarded as obstacles to Buddhism revival, so Chinese Buddhist revivalist have worked to enlighten the ignorant women. As a result, A sequel to Biographies of Chinese Buddhist nuns has published and the Buddhist schools for woman have founded. Buddhist women were expected to follow the example of Chinese Buddhist nuns in the Biographies. The first school that Buddhist women could receive modern Buddhist education is Wuchang Women`s Buddhist School. The renowned Buddhist leader, Ven. Tai Xu(太虛) established the school. On the other hand, Buddhist women made a contribution to revival Buddhism too. First of all, they founded many Buddhist school for women. There was a public school for female laborer, and a special school to train for female Buddhist researcher. In addition, we can see the Buddhist nuns who have worked for reconstruction of local Buddhist culture through A sequel to Biographies of Chinese Buddhist nuns. In the last place, the awareness of women`s rights was raised in the process of Buddhist reconstruction work among the Buddhist women. For example, they had a controversy with each other about Buddhist sexism, and asserted Buddhist nun`s rights for education.
