이주민들의 탈영토화된 음악실천과 코즈모폴리턴 문화공간의 생산: 서양계 이주민 밴드를 중심으로 = Living Home Abroad: Deterritorialized Musical Practices of ‘Expats’ and Production of Cosmopolitan Cultural Space in Korea

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1990년대 중반 이후 홍대 지역은 한국 인디음악의 중심지로 위치해 왔다. 그런데 홍대 인디 커뮤니티가 초창기부터 초지역적 문화교류의 산물이었다는 점은 종종 간과되어 왔다. 특히 한국에 원어민 영어 교사 또는 강사로 입국한 영어권 서양 이주민들은 처음부터 홍대 커뮤니티 형성의 중요한 에이전트 역할을 수행했다. 초창기 그들의 역할은 클럽고어, 팬 또는 한국인 밴드의 사이 드맨 등 두드러지지 않는 것들에 국한되어 있었다. 그러나 최근 2~3년 사이 이들의 역할은 다양해졌고, 그 활동의 가시성 또한 높아졌다. 이주민들로만 구성되거나 이주민을 리더로 하는 밴드가 우후죽순처럼 증가하고 있으며, 이주민이 운영하는 레코드 레이블, 라이브 공간, 공연 이벤트 회사, 블로그 등이 활발한 활동을 보여주고 있다. 이처럼 빠른 속도로 확장되는 이주민 음악 네트워크는 새로운 신을 형성하고 홍대 지역의 문화 지리를 변화시키고 있다. 이 글에서는 이러한 변화가 왜, 어떻게 발생하였는가, 이러한 변화를 추동한 세력은 누구인가, 그리고 이러한 변화가 만들어내는 효과는 무엇인가 등의 문제를 제기하고, 각각의 참가자가 수행하는 매개에 초점을 맞춰서 이에 대한 규명을 시도한다. 이를 통하여 이 글은 이러한 변화가 외국 땅에 자기들만의 정동적 공간을 창조하고 확보하기 위한 서양계 이주민들의 욕망과 투쟁의 산물임과 동시에 ‘코즈모폴리턴’ 공간의 발생을 초래하는 이중적이고 복잡한 매개의 과정임을 주장한다. 이와 함께 이 글은 지속적으로 변화하는 공간이 생산하는 새로운 감정, 실천, 그리고 정체성이 어떤 것인지에 대해서도 논의 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Hongdae, a small neighborhood in western Seoul, has long been the epicenter of Korean indie music. However, it has often been neglected that, from the very beginning, the Hongdae indie community has been a product of translocal cultural exchange. In particular, western expats, mostly came to Korea as English teachers, have been important agents in the making of the community. At first, their roles were more or less confined to the rather muted role of club-goers or supporting roles such as sidemen in a Korean-led band or its entourage. Lately, however, they began to take on wider roles and become quite active in various initiatives. There emerged a host of all-expat or expat-led bands, expat-run record labels and live venues, expat event organizers, bloggers and music crews. This rapidly expanding network is creating a new scene and changing cultural geography of the neighborhood. This paper traces why and how this change came about; what forces were in play when it happened; and what effects it has produced focusing on the mediations each participant carried out in the process. This paper argues that, while this change was an outcome of western expats’ desire to create an affective space in which they could ‘feeling at home’ on a foreign soil, it always ends up producing more ‘cosmopolitan’ spaces as it involves complex mediations of heterogeneous actors. For this reason, the space keeps evolving producing new emotions, practices and identities.
