남강 김태곤 선생의 현장 중심 연구 방법의 성과와 의의

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 한국민속학회에서 해방 후 한국민속학회 첫걸음 기획 발표의 하나로 이루어진 성과물로, 한국 무속연구의 길잡이가 된 남강 김태곤 선생의 연구 성과를 살핀 글이다. 이 글에서는 남강 선생의 현장 중심 연구 방법에 초점을 맞추어 성과를 정리하였다. 남강 선생은 전국 무당굿의 양상과 무당의 특징에 주목하고, 그것이 무가로 어떻게 표현되는가에 집중하였다. 이 결과 무당의 유형이나 전국 무당굿의 판도는 드러났지만 무당굿이 가지고 있는 제의성 이외의 특성이나, 무당을 둘러싼 굿판의 환경과 재가집과의 다양한 관계는 드러나지 않았다. 남강 선생은 현장을 중심으로 연구를 진행하여 무당의 유형, 신의 종류와 계통 구분, 무속 제의의 유형 구분, 무속신화의 유형을 귀납적으로 정리한다.. 무속 신앙의 결과물로 모든 것을 바라보고, 그러한 인식을 무속인의 관념으로 파악하여 나름의 기준을 제시한 후 현장 사례를 그대로 가져온다. 분류 기준의 모호함이나 구분된 자료 배치의 이상에 대해 논란이 있을 수 있다. 나름의 기준을 명확히 세우고 그에 맞춰 구분의 틀과 명칭을 정립한 후 그에 부응하는 자료나 사례를 배치할 수도 있다. 하지만 남강 선생은 현장에 존재하는 자료의 양상에 중점을 두었다. 연역론으로 기준을 정립하였지만 일정한 한계가 있을 수 있어 그동안의 조사 결과를 귀납론으로 정리한 것이다. 이처럼 남강 선생의 연구에는 현장 중심, 무속 신앙 중심, 무속인 중심이 일관되게 자리하고 있다. 이를 바탕으로 한국 무속을 바라보는 이론으로 ‘원본 이론’을 정립하였지만 후대로 이어지지는 못했다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the research achievements of Namgang Kim Tae-gon who was a guide to Korean shamanism research as one of the results of the first planning and presentation of the Korean Folk Association carried out by the Korean Folk Association after the emancipation. This article arranges the results focusing on Namgang’s field-riented research method. Namgang paid attention to the aspects of shamanistic Gut and the characteristics of shamans across the country and focused on how it was expressed in shaman songs. As a result, the types of shamans or the aspects of shamanistic Gut across the country could be discovered; however, the characteristics of shamanistic Gut other than ritual aspects, the environment of Gut surrounding the shamans, or diverse relationships with the clients have not been revealed. Focusing on the field while studying, Namgang organizes inductively the types of shamans, the types or lines of the gods, the types of shamanic rituals, and the types of shamanic myths. Looking at everything through the result of shamanistic faith and understanding such perception as the shaman’s notion, he presents his own standards and brings the cases of the field as they are. There may be controversy over the ambiguity of criteria for the classification or oddness in the arrangement of the data classified. It is also possible to place data or cases correspondingly after setting up the criteria clearly and then establishing the framework for the classification and names accordingly. However, Namgang focused on the aspects of the data that were present in the field. Although the standards were established through deductive theory, there could be certain limitations, so the results of the investigation accumulated until then were arranged through inductive theory. Therefore, Namgang’s research is field-oriented, shamanistic faith-oriented, and shaman-oriented consistently. Based on that, he established ‘the theory of the original’ to look at Korean shamanism, but it failed to be handed down to future generations.
