Two different tailer made gas nitrided SKD 61 steels is were investigated. From optical and scanning electron microscope analyses, white and diffusion layers were found about 2-3㎛ and 50~80㎛ thickness from the surface, respectively. Diffusion layer consisted of Fe2-3N compound and maximum hardness value of surface reached Hv 1280 and saturated at Hv 580 to the 50~80㎛ from the surface because of low reation temperature and shout nitriding time. Experimental results suggest that compositions and thickness of tailer made samples can be useful for machine tools by gas nitriding.
