This study was conducted to investigate the mental health status and psychological damage of victims of the May 18 Democratization Movement and to explore ways to improve their psychological problems. The data used in the study is the result of summarizing and reanalyzing the results of ‘The May 18 Democratization Movement Victims Survey’ conducted in 2022. In particular, the survey results focused on the ‘psychological health situation’. As a result of the analysis, the PTSD rate among study participants was 47.1%. Considering that it is around 5% for the general public, it was about 10 times higher. The DSO rate was 62.7%, indicating that a significant number of research participants had difficulty regulating their emotions, evaluated themselves negatively, and experienced obstacles in make relationships with people, and the CPTSD rate was measured at 42.9%, according to the study. This means that almost half of the participants had long-term, repeated traumatic experiences. In short, this means that psychological health services for May 18 victims have been poor so far, and there is an urgent need to improve psychological health service support.
Perceived social support refers to the level of support one receives from family, friends, and neighbors. The average score was 64.87 for family, 50.55 for friends, and 54.65 for neighbors. Except for family support, the score was barely above average. This means that social support is poor. It is well known that the role of ‘community’ is very important in the healing process of state violence trauma. A change in social awareness is essential to move these people from the outskirts of the community to the center of the community. Social support is very important in recovery of victims of state violence trauma, and not only support from family and community, but also social support at the state level is necessary.
