This study is a linguistic analysis of village names in the central area of Kyungpook Province including 10 counties : Chungdo, Talsung, Kyungsan, Wolsung, Yungchun, Koonwi, Chilgok, Sunsan, Euisung and Chungsong. Among them the vocalic alternations of the local names will be studied and the focus of this paper is concentrated on an observation of the Korean Mutation (Umlaut), using the materials of village names in the central area of Kyungpook Province.
The result of this study is summarized as follows:
1. There are eleven kinds of Mutation found in the local village names:
1) changing from a·i to E·i (a·i to E·y, a·y to E·i) 2) from a·i to i·i 3) from E·i to i·i 4) from ??·i to E·i 5) from ??·i to i·i (??·y to i·i) 6) from o·i to E·i 7) from o·i to i·i 8) o(i) to ui·i 9) from u·i to ui·i 10) from u·i to i·i 11) from wi·i to i·i
Those proved to be more than the three kinds argued among scholars in the past.
When I examined the frequency of the eleven kinds of the mutations, among the whole 343 examples of mutated names, the largest kind of mutation from /a/ to /E/ occurs in 179 names. The second largest one from /??/ to /i/ in 83 names, and third largest one from /o/ to /i/ in 38 names. Therefore the mutations of /a//??//o/ are most frequent as argued in the past. Both from /u/ to /i/ and from /w/ to /i/ are also recognized as proved in my investigation.
2. The general Korean Mutation is to change the low-centrol vowel /a/ and the mid-central /??/ to mid-front vowel, /ε/(ㅐ) and /e/(ㅔ). But here except for the combination a·i, more than half of each combination is changed to the high-front vowel. Among the 92 combinations ??·i, 83 are changed to the high-front vowel, excluding nine of E·i combination.
In the combination o·i, 38 are changed to i·i with the exception of six. In u·i, eight are changed to i·i with the exception of four. In w·i, 13 are changed to i·i without exception.
Thus the front-mutation is made in the same way as words in general of Kyungpook dialects.
3. Korean mutation is limited by certain intervocalic consonants. There are 248 kinds of intervocalic velars and 66 bilabials. In addition to these, there are also 13 kinds of intervocalic dentals or alveolars.
Of 333 examples, velars are 74.4%, bilabials are 19.8% and dentals or alveolars are 4.0%, and mutation between vowels are 1.8%.
Intervocalic palatals ㅅ and ㅊ do not cause mutation but intervocalic dentals, ㄹ and ㄴ cause mutation in the preceding vowels.
