자기초월과 자기정체성을 통섭하는 여성 영성 형성 연구 = Study of the formation of women’s spirituality aiming to conciliate self-transcendence and self-identity: Focus on Letty Mandeville Russell, Maria Harris, and Anne E. Streaty Wimberly

국문 초록 (Abstract)

그동안 기독교 영성에서 자기 자신을 비우는 것과 정화에 초점을 두었다. 영성에는 다양한 특성이 있음에도 불구하고 자기를 초월하고 자기에게서 벗어나는 것이 중요한 특징이 되었기 때문이다. 그러나 기독교 영성은 자기 자신을 초월하는 특성뿐 아니라 인간의 삶을 통합하는 차원이 있다. 이는 자기감각과 자기가치감에 영향을 주고 이러한 점에서 삶의 통합은 개인에게 정체성을 형성해 준다고 볼 수 있다. 그런데 지금까지 영성형성 형성에서 상대적으로 자기정체성이 약화되었다. 그 이유는 무엇일까. 마이클 다우니에 의하면 이전 시대의 영성은 사제와 수도자들을 중심으로 한 엘리트적이었다. 엘리트요, 정통적인 공식적인 기독교를 이끌어왔던 대다수의 남성들에게는 자기가치를 존중하고 자기지식을 갖는 것보다 자기에게서 벗어나 자기를 비우는 것이 주요한 과제가 되었기 때문이었다. 그렇기 때문에 여성의 영성에 관하여 논할 때에는 기존의 자기초월뿐 아니라 자기정체성을 통섭하는 영성이 필요하다.
이러한 목적으로 본 글은 여성기독교교육학자로서 학자적인 식견과 영성의 풍부한 경험과 유산을 가지고 있는 레티 러셀(Letty Mandeville Russell), 마리아 해리스(Maria Harris), 앤 윔벌리(Anne E. Streaty Wimberly)의 영성교육을 통해 자기정체성과 자기초월을 통섭하는 여성영성형성을 연구하고자 하였다. 레티 러셀에게 자기초월은 타자를 향한 삶이며, 자기정체성은 자립성과 독립성을 갖고 타인의 해방을 위해 파트너와 청지기가 되는 것이다. 마리아 해리스에게 자기초월은 신적 현존에게로의 초월이며, 자기정체성은 주체자로서 세계 재창조의 주역이 되는 것이다. 앤 윔벌리에게 자기초월은 상황에 분리하여 자기를 긍정하는 것과 영적, 윤리적, 물질적, 사회정치적, 심리사회적, 교육적, 공동체적으로 해방하는 것이며, 자기정체성은 해방하는 지혜를 얻어 자기 자신도 자유하며 타인의 해방을 위해 나아가는 사람이 되는 것이다. 이러한 학자들의 이해와 여성의 관계지향적인 측면은 각 위격이 있으시지만 삼위일체 하나님이 한 분이신 것처럼, 여성이 자율성과 독립성을 가지고 이웃과 상호성, 평등성, 상호관계에 바탕을 두고 영성을 형성하는 것에서 볼 수 있다. 그리하여 기독교여성영성교육의 목적을 “여성이 삼위일체 하나님 안에서 삶의 목적과 의미를 발견하고, 성령 안에서 자율성과 독립성을 가진 주체로 살아가도록 안내되어, 하나님의 형상을 회복하고, 하나님과 이웃의 파트너가 되어 하나님 나라를 구현해 나가는 것이다.”고 제안하며 교육의 내용 및 방법을 나의 이야기, 다른 여성들의 이야기, 복음의 이야기로 보며 교육의 장을 지지와 환대가 있는 공동체로 보았다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

So far, Christian spirituality has focused on emptying and purifying the self. This is because an important characteristic of spirituality involves transcending the self. However, Christian spirituality has a dimension that integrates human life as well as characteristically developing beyond the self. This also affects the sense of self and self-worth, and the integration of life allows individuals to form identities. However, what is the reason that spiritual formation has overlooked and weakened self-identity until now? According to Michael Downey, the spirituality of the previous era was elite, centered on priests and religious leaders. For the elite men who had been leading orthodox formal Christianity, it was a major task to transcend themselves rather than develop self-identity Therefore, when we talk about women’s spirituality, it is necessary to study not only the existence of self-transcendence but also self-identity.
This essay will discuss the spiritual education of Letty Mandeville Russell, Maria Harris and Anne E. Streaty Wimberly, respectively. All of them possessed a wealth of experience and spiritual insight as Christian scholars. Letty Mandeville Russell saw “ self-transcendence” as life orientated toward the other, and “self-identity” as self-reliance and independence, becoming a partner and steward in the liberation of others. Maria Harris saw “self-transcendence” as transcendence to the divine presence, and “self–identity” as the subject and re-creator of the world. Anne Wimberly viewed “self-transcendence” as having different views on circumstances beyond those that affirm the self, and also as spiritual, ethical, material, socio-political, psychosocial, educational, and communal liberation. She saw “self-identity” as being liberated and freeing herself to move forward and assist in the liberation of others. These scholars’ understanding of the relationship-oriented aspects of women’s lives is manifested in the Trinity God. This can be seen from the fact that women form spirituality through reciprocity, equality, and a mutual relationship with their neighbors, as well as autonomy and independence. Thus, the purpose of Christian women’s spiritual education is to “guide women to discover the purpose and meaning of life in the Trinity God, to live as a subject with autonomy and independence in the Holy Spirit, to restore God's image, and to be a partner of God and to realize the kingdom of God.” We suggested the content and method of education as our stories, other women’s stories, the gospel’s stories, and the field of education as a community of support and hospitality.
