워싱턴 D.C. 도시계획과 시각 이미지 연구 = A Study on the Urban Planning of Washington D.C. and its Visual Images

This thesis examines the planning of the national capital of the United States of America as the visual representation of a new sovereignty, and analyzes it in relation to contemporary visual images. By exploring the early development of Washington D.C., the paper looks at the founding visions of the United States, and how they took shape through debate and various issues from 1790 to 1850s. This thesis posits the plan for the capital as a visual realization of two American political ideals, the presidency and democracy, as a way of understanding the symbolism of Washington, D.C., as the capital of the United States, and its political ideology. In addition, by examining the city plans from contemporary paintings and prints, the effects of urban planning on visual images can be identified. Through this process, this paper intends to reveal the systematic connection between the production and acceptance of visual images and seek an in-depth understanding.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목표는 새로운 국가의 이상을 나타내는 시각 상징으로서 미국의 수도계획을 분석하고, 이 계획을 당대의 시각 이미지와 연관 지어 논의하는 것이다. 워싱턴 D.C.(Washington, District of Columbia)의 수도 계획과 건설이 이루어지기 시작한 1790년부터 1850년대까지의 논의와 쟁점을 통해 미국의 국가적 이상과 이를 시각적으로 구현하기 위한 마스터플랜을 알아보고자 하였다. 본고는 미국의 수도계획을 국가의 정치적 이상인 대통령제와 민주주의를 시각적으로 구현하고자 한 결과로서 보고 워싱턴 D.C.라는 미국의 수도가 가진 상징성과 도시에 담긴 정치적 이념을 읽어보았다. 아울러 이 시기 제작된 대통령 초상화, 풍경화와 같은 시각 이미지에 반영된 수도 계획안을 살펴봄으로써 도시계획이 당대 시각 이미지 제작에 어떠한 영향을 끼쳤고 당대인들에게 어떻게 수용되었는지 알아볼 것이다. 이런 과정을 통해 도시 계획을 담은 시각 이미지의 제작과 수용에 유기적 관계를 밝히고 심도 있는 이해를 모색하고자 하였다.
