The most important factor in the urban landscape is the elevation of the buildings that make up the sidewalk. Part of the elevation, the facade sign, leaves a visual-perceptual strong image for pedestrians and is an important factor in creating a public image of the cityscape directly. The public image of the street environment is a result of the interaction between all information transmitted from the street environment and is the product of active visual perception. The facade signboard is a private property that must be installed and managed by the owner, but it has a social responsibility as a public image in that it continuously affects pedestrians and street environments visually. The facade signboard should be approached from the perspective of the landscape that forms the image of the city.
The importance of elevation management of buildings was raised by presenting guidelines and guidelines for the manufacture and installation design of signs along with the maintenance of illegal signs by local governments. However, there are an increasing number of cases of installing facade signboards in order to preserve the characteristics of individual businesses. In addition, due to the lack of detailed laws and guidelines on how to mark the signs, friction between business owners and public officials is constantly emerging due to the installation of the signboards.
This study focused on the facades of commercial buildings and outdoor advertisements adjacent to the main road at 145 Gwanak-ro(Seoul National University Station ~ Gwanak-gu Office) in Seoul to "investigate and analyze the perception trends of signboards due to differences in facade composition.”This area was selected for the "Street with Beautiful Signboards" project in 2008 and has a total length of 500m, with the signboard improvement project underway from March 2008 to December 2008. Most commercial buildings in this area are leased and used by small businesses, and various types of facade signs are installed. As of September 2020, 223 signboards were installed at 220 businesses, of which 82, 36.8%, were found to be facade signboards. In this study, the'facade signboard' is defined as a signboard that is used so that the entire facade is recognized as an advertisement by finishing the exterior of a building with a different material. The experiment was conducted on the type of signboard consisting of the facade of the entire elevation with high distribution among the investigated types. The classification of facade signboards was based on the size, colors, patterns, and materials of the facade of individual businesses, and based on this, analysis research was conducted on the tendency of the perception of outdoor advertisements due to differences in the composition of the facade, which led to the following measures for the composition of the facades of facade signboards for urban landscapes.
First, since the facade signboards are mostly composed of the background color of the building and the background color of the facade of the facade, it was necessary to consider the overall harmony with the facade of the building rather than the excessive use of intense colors, and was induced to be visually seen as the facade of the building.
Second, simplifying the visual confusion of the facade required quantitative guidelines for the specifications of each building so that each building could be recognized as a single facade, and it was also necessary to encourage them to choose free harmony rather than requiring uniformity.
Third, passard signboards can be seen as an element that can improve continuity and harmony among the visual characteristics of the landscape. When processing permission and deliberation, where the use of a building is a facility of a commercial building, it is necessary to make an elevation plan of the building, such as the size or color of the facade, from the time of the design of the building in consideration of the number, size, etc. of the store.
Fourthly, diversity should be acknowledged and harmonization taken into account in the use of facade materials. A signboard shall be developed in harmony with the balance between the two, taking into account the functional aspects of the publicity of the business establishment and the delivery of information and the impact on the environment of the street in the urban space.
Several components of the facade are divided by area, but they overlap each other and penetrate each other. It is difficult to distinguish which factors have a greater influence on the formation of the street landscape image. Therefore, it is important to form the facade signboard in harmony with the elements of the facade in consideration of the overall urban landscape.
Accordingly, by presenting guidelines on the institutional direction and conditions of the facade signboards, the results of this study will serve as basic data to prepare tools for interpreting the characteristics of the facade signboards in urban landscape.
