Japanese Language Textbooks used in Korea and Japan During the Period of Japanese Colonial Rule

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 일제시대 1910-1945) 한국에서 사용 되었던 국어 일본어) 교과서와 같은 시기에 발행된 일본에서 사용 되었던 국어 일본어) 교과서의 비교 연구를 통해 일제시대 의 교육적 목적과 교육적 이데올로기의 의미를 교과서 삽화의 시각적 이미지 분석과 텍스트 분석을 통해 살펴보는 것을 그 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는, 비판적 담화 분석 법 Critical Discourse Analysis)을 사용하여 텍스트와 시각적 이미지 분석을 중심으로 한국에서 사용된 국어 교과서 ‘국어 독본’과 일본에서 사용된 ‘소학 독본’을 비교 분석하였다. 일본과 한국에서 쓰여 진 교과서 에서 어떠한 시각적 이미지와 텍스트를 주로 사용 되었는지 살펴보고, 강조 되었거나 혹은 주가 되는 이데올로기적 의미가 무엇인지 살펴보았다. 더 나아가, 식민지 교육이 추구하는 이상적 아동 상을 비교 분석을 통해 밝히는데 그 의의가 있겠다. 두 교과서를 분석하여 비교하여 본 결과, 같은 주제나 제목아래 내용이 다르거나 강조하는 내용이 각각 다르게 표현되어 있었으며 ‘국어독본’ 에서 추구하는 이상적인 아동상은 ‘소학독본’에서 추구하는 아동상과는 서로 다른 양상을 보였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study will explore and describe the impact of Japanese colonial policy, as seen in the content of Korean and Japanese primary school textbooks published in the years between 1910 and 1945. The aim of this project is to compare and contrast the political and educational ideologies projected in the primary school Japanese language textbooks published and used in Korea and Japan during the period of Japanese colonial rule 1910 - 1945). This study utilises critical curriculum theory. Critical Discourse Analysis CDA) is used for analysing the texts, whilst visual grammar analysis, primarily based on Kress & van Leeuwen’s 1996, 2006) theory, is adopted for the visual images.
When Korea was colonised, Japanese was imposed as the national language, and Japanese textbooks were used in Korean schools. In order to examine the Japanese language curriculum and textbooks issued under the Japanese educational reform called Chosun Education Ordinance ), three data sets were chosen, based on year, level, appropriateness and publisher. The data for analysis consists of the language textbooks Kokugotokuhon levels 2 and 3) that were published by Chosunchongdogbu the Japanese Governor-General of Korea) to be used for Korean students, and the Shougakutokuhon levels 2 and 3) that were published by the Monbusho the Ministry of Education) for Japanese students. By comparing the texts and images in Kokugotokuhon and Shougakutokuhon, this study verifies how the Japanese colonisers projected different subjectivities onto both groups, and promoted their different visions of ideal worlds and ideal citizens, that is, how the colonisers conveyed the Japanese government s ideologies in both Japan and Korea.
