Abstract Bongyeopsa was founded as Hwachasa during the Unified Silla period. It was discussed that Hwachasa was a temple founded by Park Jeok-o, who was dispatched from the central government of Silla in 766. It was understood that Hwachasa was founded due to the need for safe management of the transportation route connecting Chungju and Cheongju to the Hanam region.
The analysis of stone art was conducted mainly on the stone pagodas and stone Buddhas in the Bongyeopsa Temple area. By analyzing the three-story stone pagoda in Juksan-ri and the Unified Silla foundation at the bottom of the stone pagoda, it was mentioned that the Bongyeopsa Temple site was a temple of very high status as it was the only temple in Gyeonggi-do that had a three-story stone pagoda from the Unified Silla period and a stone Buddha statue resembling a gilt-bronze Buddha.
The five-story stone pagoda of Bongyeopsa Temple, which is distinct from the three-story stone pagoda of Silla, was interpreted as a monument symbolizing Goryeo culture. The stone seated bodhisattva statue of Maesan-ri was viewed as a monumental stone Buddha proclaiming by King Gwangjong of Goryeo that the era of the aristocracy was over and the era of the emperor had begun. It was discussed that the five-story stone pagoda of Mireukdang of Maesan-ri was built as twin pagodas. The five-story stone pagoda and stone seated Buddha statue of Jangmyeongsa Temple were also analyzed along with the stone art of the Bongyeopsa Temple area. Through this, it was found that the nature of the temple changed from a state-run temple to a provincial temple after the 11th century.
