『謝氏南征記』 創作背景 再考 -『丹巖漫錄』을 중심으로 - = A study on the writing background of 『Sasee-namjeongkee』

Close readings of Seopo-yeonbo(『西浦年譜』), Danam-manrok(『丹巖漫錄』), Inhyun-Wangwhoojeon(『仁顯王后傳』) and other books show that Kim Manjoong wrote Sasee-narmjeongkee(『謝氏南征記』) at the place of the second exile. There are two purposes of writing the novel. One is to relax the worry of Mrs Yun his mother. The other purpose is to criticize indirectly the false charge on the writer by making the current political situation correspond to the plot and characters of the fiction. Also the writer projects, in the character of Sa Jeongok(사정옥) the protagonist, his longing for the change of King Sookjong’s mind and restoration of Queen Inhyun.

In the novel, Yoo Yeonsoo who fell in love with mistress Gyo, could not see through the slander of cunning mistress, deserted his wife. He is equvalent to King Sookjong who is irresolute, self-righteous and emotional. And the good and wise wife Mrs. Sa corresponds to Queen Inhyun. King’s concubine Heebeen(희빈), who snares and curses Queen is equivalent to Gyo Chaeran in the novel.

The fact that a prince was born of Heebeen and King loved him excessively was the cause of the political turmoil of Kisa-hwangook(기사환국). The political situation that the distinguished services of the writer and his ancestors for the kings were ignored and the writer was persecuted and exiled to a lonely island, led him to write a political allegory. In the fictional world he sought a kind of psychological catharsis and tried to comfort his mother’s anxiety about him.
