21세기 대학의 자유교육, 그 정체성에 관한 고찰 = Finding Identity of Liberal Arts Education for a 21st Century University - Focus on the Relevant Discourse by American Higher Education Society-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

21세기 변화와 위기의 시대에 대학의 사회적 책임은 무엇인가. 이 연구는 자유교육이라는 주제를 통하여 이 같은 물음에 대한 답을 찾고자 수행되었다. 이에, 연구자는 미국고등교육의 맥락에서 자유교육의 개념을 짚어가면서 21세기 미국대학들의 자유교육 정체성 찾기의 과정을 탐구하고자 하였다. 구체적으로, 연구자는 먼저 미국대학의 자유교육의 개념을 미국고등교육의 역사적 맥락에서 짚어보고, 자유교육의 전통적 가치가 미국사회의 산업발달과정에서 등장한 이질적 가치들과 충돌하면서 어떠한 도전 앞에 서게 되었는지를 살펴보며, 마지막으로, 시대에 부합하는 자유교육의 정체성을 찾고자 미국대학들이 한 세기 이상 벌여온 논쟁과 담론들을 분석하였다. 연구자는 논의결과들을 토대로 21세기 미국대학들의 자유교육 정체성 찾기의 과정이 한국대학교육에 줄 수 있는 유의미한 함의가 무엇일지 논하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

What is social responsibility for a 21st century university? The main purpose of this study is to find the answer to this question as focusing on liberal arts education in American higher education. To this end, this study firstly conducted a historical review of the concept of liberal arts and liberal arts education on American campus and attempted to find how traditional value of liberal arts education has been struggling to compromise with newly arising value as having collided with educational demands of industrialized American society. This study then reviewed dispute and discourse related to the identity of liberal arts education that American universities have sought for over the last hundred years. Based on the findings, this study developed discussion about a new role of liberal arts education for a 21st century Korean university.
