This study aims at investigating the differences of date violence seriousness perception between policemen and citizens in South Korea. In particular, the present study concentrates on gender characteristics of date violence offenders. Date violence draws serious social attention, and the detrimental social atmosphere has remained even after the implementation of the stalking punishment law. In addition, it is true that the police are insufficient in responding to dating violence cases, but there is few study that has focused on the gender characteristic of offenders in terms of crime seriousness perception of police officers and ordinary citizens in evaluating the situation of dating violence.
This study conducted a survey using a scenario to find out whether there was a difference in the evaluation of dating violence between the police officer group and the general public group. As a result of the study, when the victim of dating violence is a woman, the mean scores of two groups in the evaluation of the situation between police officers and ordinary people were not statistically significant. However, in the case of male victims, there was a difference between the two groups in evaluating the degree of violence of the violent act described in the scenario and the degree of responsibility of the female perpetrator. The limitations of this study and implications for follow-up studies were discussed.
