This study attempted to investigate the effect of solitude motivation on psychological well-being of unmarried adults and to verify the mediating effect of cognitive emotional regulation strategies.
To this end, data of 274 unmarried adults aged 20 to 39 were collected through an online survey. Descriptive statistical analysis and correlation analysis were conducted through SPSS 21.0, structural relationships and mediating effects were analyzed through AMOS 21.0, and the significance of the mediating effect was verified through bootstrapping.
The results of the study are as follows. First, self-determining solitude motivation showed a significant correlation with psychological well-being, and adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies and, non-self-determining solitude motivation showed a significant correlation with psychological well-being, adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies, maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation, and psychological well-being showed a significant correlation with adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies. Second, the mediating effect of the adaptive cognitive emotional regulation strategy was significant in the relationship between self-determining solitude motivation, non-self-determining solitude motivation, and psychological well-being. Third, the mediating effect of the maladaptive cognitive emotional regulation strategy was not significant in the relationship between self-determining solitude motivation, non-self-determining solitude motivation, and psychological well-being. This means that self-determining solitude motivation and non-self-determining solitude motivation affect psychological well-being through adaptive cognitive emotional regulation strategies.
Finally, based on the results of this study, the significance, limitations, and suggestions were discussed.
