장애인의 가족 내 주변화 경험에 대한 연구 = A study on the experience of marginalization within the family of people with disability

국문 초록 (Abstract)

장애가족에 관한 기존연구들은 이들이 겪는 사회적 배제와 차별, 돌봄의 문제에 집중해 오고 있다. 장애인과 비장애인 가족성원간의 일상적 상호작용이 사적인 삶의 영역으로 간주됨으로써, 가족내 갈등과 적응의 양상은 충분한 사회적, 학문적 관심을 받지 못하고 있다. 본 연구는 장애인이 일상생활을 해나가는 가운데 자신의 가족 성원과의 관계 속에서 느끼는 차별경험과 이에 대한 인식을 분석하고자 한다.
장애인의 가족은 장애인을 지지하고 지원한다. 그러나 이들이 능력주의 가치관을 내면화하고 있을 때 장애인에 대한 차별적 태도와 행동이 동시에 나타나기도 한다. 장애인의 가족은 장애를 가장 가까이 경험하는 집단으로 장애에 대한 이해가 풍부한 반면, 비장애인 중심으로 운영되는 사회구조와 문화의 영향을 받는 존재이기 때문이다. 이 가운데 장애인은 장애가 없는 가족성원과의 일상 관계에서 미세한 차별과 주변화를 경험하게 된다. 본 연구는 총9명의 지체, 시각장애인을 심층면접하여 주제분석을 수행하였다. 분석결과 장애인은 가족으로부터 결혼이나 진학, 연애, 독립 등 비장애인과 같은 삶을 살 수 있을 것이라고 인정받지 못하며, 무능력하고 의존적인 존재, 가족에게 도움을 받아야만 하는 존재로 위치된다. 또한 장애인은 자신과 관련된 의사결정이나 가족관련 의사결정에서 지속적으로 배제되기도 하며, 장애를 부끄러워 하는 가족들로부터 함께 외출을 거부당하기도 한다. 이 결과들은 장애인의 가족이 비장애 중심주의 가치관을 내면화할 때 장애인은 동등한 가족구성원이 아닌 ‘장애’인으로 주변화됨을 보여준다. 장애인이 사회참여를 시도할 때 가장 밀접한 관계에 있는 비장애인 가족 구성원들에게서 조차도 일상에서의 주변화가 일어나고 있음을 보여줌으로써 장애인이 겪는 사회적 배제가 가장 기초적이고 일상적인 부분에서조차 어떻게 나타나는지 장애차별의 양상을 다양하게 조명하여 설명하는데 의의가 있다.

Previous literature on the families of people with disabilities has focused on the problems of social exclusion, discrimination, and care that they experience. As the daily interactions between disabled and non-disabled family members are considered a private sphere of life, aspects of conflict and adaptation within the family have not received sufficient social and academic attention. This study aims to analyze the experiences and perceptions of discrimination of people with disabilities in their relationships with their family members in their daily lives. Families of people with disabilities help and support the disabled person. However, when they internalize meritocratic values, discriminatory attitudes and behaviors toward people with disabilities sometimes appear at the same time. This is because the family of a disabled person is the group that experiences disability most closely and has a rich understanding of disability but is also influenced by the social structure and culture that operates around non-disabled people. Within this, people with disabilities experience subtle discrimination and marginalization in their daily relationships with non-disabled family members. This study conducted a thematic analysis through in-depth interviews with nine physically and visually impaired people. The analysis revealed that disabled people are not recognized by their families as capable of leading the same lives as non-disabled people, such as marriage, higher education, dating, and independence, and are positioned as incompetent and dependent beings who need to be helped by their families. In addition, disabled people are constantly excluded from decisions that affect them or their families and are sometimes refused permission to go out with their families, who are ashamed of their disabilities. These findings show that when the family of a disabled person internalizes non-disability-centered values, the disabled person is marginalized as a 'disabled' person rather than as an equal family member. By showing that when disabled people try to participate in society, marginalization occurs in everyday life, even among non-disabled family members to whom they are most closely related, it shows how the social exclusion experienced by disabled people is manifested in even the most basic and everyday aspects of disability discrimination.
