매트릭스 조직은 구시대의 유물로 전락한 것인가? = Is Matrix Organizational Still in Use? Investigation of the Use and Usefulness of Matrix Organization from the Practical Perspective

국문 초록 (Abstract)

매트릭구조는 1970-80년 대 서로 상충되는 목표를 달성하는 조직형태로 인식되어 큰 인기를 끌었다. 그래서 많은 조직들이 매트릭스 구조를 도입하였는데, 기대했던 효과보다는 부정적 결과를 더 많인 경험하였다. 특히, 현장의 실무자들은 이중 명령체계 때문에 혼란과 복잡성을 겪게 되었고, 그 결과, 매트릭스 구조는 현장에서 금기시되는 용어로 전락하였다.
최근 Galbraith(2009)은 조직설계 기준을 기능을 포함하여 2개 이상 적용한 조직구조를 매트릭스 구조라고 정의하고, 현시점에서 매트릭스 조직을 효과적으로 운영하는 방안에 대해서 논의하였다. 본 연구는 이런 배경 하에서 한국의 그룹사를 대상으로 하여 실제로 매트릭스 구조가 운영되고 있는지와 운영에 따른 긍정적 그리고 부정적 효과를 조사하였다. 조사결과, 용어와는 별개로 그룹사의 많은 여역에서 매르릭스 구조가 도입되어 운영 중인 것으로 나타났다. 그리고, 매트릭스 도입에 따른 긍정적 효과가 예상보다는 컸고, 부정적 효과는 예상보다 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 이를 바탕으로 한국에서 매트릭스 조직의 운영 방안에 대해서 논의하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The fad of matrix organization arised in 1970-80s with the belief that it can make it possible to pursuit for two contradictive goals, namely, functional expertises and the integration of them. As more and more firms adopted, the more experienced negative outcomes. Especially, the employees suffered more ambiguity and uncertainty due to 2 boss system and matrix structure became to be a kind of taboo in practical field.
However, Galbraith(2009) recently argued that matrix structure is still in use although the very word, matrix is not used openly. He redefined that any structures that adopted more that two structure designing criteria are matrix structure. According to Galbraith(2009), this study investigate the use, positive effects, and negative effects of matrix structure in a Korean corporate. The results showed that matrix structure is still in use across many parts of the Korean corporate. The positive effects of matrix structure was more than the expectation but its negative effects was less than the expectation.
