한국에서 베르테르 효과에 대한 연구 : 유명인의 자살이 일반인의 자살에 미치는 영향 = The Werther effect in Korea

국문 초록 (Abstract)

목적 : 한국에서 베르테르 효과가 있는지를 규명하기 위해 1994년~2005년 사이에 10명의 유명인 자살 사건 이후 일반인의 자살률 증가가 있는지 알아보았다.
방법 및 결과 : 시계열 Plot 과 자살자수 조사 결과 이은주씨 자살 사건 이후 가장 큰 모방 자살이 있었다. 이 외에 정몽헌씨, 안상영-남상국-박태영씨, 서지원씨, 김광석씨의 자살 사건 순으로 유명인 자살 사건 후 일반 대중의 자살이 증가하였으며, 김성재씨, 박석태씨, 이수일씨의 사건 후에는 대중의 자살이 증가하지 않았다. 이중 김성재씨 자살 사건은 사회적 영향력이 매우 큼에도 불구하고 사건 초기 타살의 의혹으로 자살 스토리의 매력도가 떨어져 모방 자살이 일어나지 않은 것으로 보인다.
모방 자살은 나이와 성에 있어 자살 모델과 비슷한 사람들이 똑같은 방법으로 자살하는 경향이 있는데, 이은주씨 자살 사건 후에는 20대(P=0.0311)이고 대졸 이상자(P=0.0004)이며 직업이 미상으로 분류되거나 사무직 종사자인 사람(P=0.0012)의 자살이 유의하게 증가하였고, 통계적으로 유의한 결과(α=0.05로 간주)는 아니지만 미혼자의 자살도 증가(P=0.1376)하였다. 정몽헌씨 자살 사건 후에는 평소보다 4% 더 많은 남자(P=0.0333)들이 자살 하였다. 안상영-남상국-박태영씨 자살 사건 후에는 40대→60대 이상→50대(P=0.0001)의 순으로 배우자가 있는 사람(P=0.0142)이 대도시를 중심으로 자살이 증가(P=0.0029)하였다. 그리고 김광석씨 자살 사건 이후 10대와 60대이상의 유의한 자살 증가(P=0.0301)가 있었다.
마지막으로 유명인 자살 사건 이후 자살률의 변화를 살펴보니 사건 1달 후 특징적으로 증가하는 자살률을 관찰할 수 있었으며 이는 2달 뒤에는 다소 감소하여 3달 뒤에 평소 수준으로 떨어졌다.
결론 : 이로써 한국에서도 유명인의 자살 후에 일반인의 모방 자살 경향이 있다고 할 수 있겠다. 그러므로 앞으로 자살문제를 다루는데 있어 이 또한 고려가 되어져야 할 것이다. 현재 우리나라는 자살 증가율 1위국 이며, 전체 사망 원인 중 자살은 4위를 차지하는 등 자살의 사회적 문제가 매우 위급한 상태이다. 사회의 자살에 대한 관심과 노력은 재고되어져야 하며, 각계의 자살방지를 위한 노력은 좀더 효율적으로 이루어져야 하겠다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Objectives : In order to verify whether the so-called Werther effect exists, was examined the suicide rate of the general population from the year 1994 to 2005 in conjunction with ten celebrity suicides during the same period.

Methods & Results : Certain sections of the media referred to this period as the most 'copycat' suicides since the self-inflicted death of actress Lee Eun Ju, which incidentally was dramatized through a times series plot. The order of celebrity suicides were as follows: Jeong Mong Heon, Ahn Sang Yeong-Nam Sang Kuk-Pak Tae Yeong, Seo Ji Weon and Kim Gwang Seok. This was not considered a sudden increase in the suicide rate, until after the subsequent deaths of Kim Seong Jae, Pak Seok Tae and Lee Su Il. Although the death of Kim Seong Jae was highly sensationalized, the rumour that he might have been murdered seems to have reduced public apprehenstion that it might lead to copycat suicides.
People appear to gain motivation to commit a copycat suicide following the actions of their role models of the same gender and age group. After the death of the actress Lee Eun Ju, there was a significant increase of suicide rate for 20-something people (P=0.0311), college graduates (P=0.0004) and white-collar workers (P=0.0012).
After the death of Jeong Mong Heon, there was an increase in the suicide rate by four percent for males (P=0.0333). After the death of Ahn Sang Yeong-Nam Sang Kuk-Pak Tae Yeong, there was an increase in the suicide rate for 40-something, 50-something, and 60-something people by order of frequency (P=0.0001). There was an increase of suicide rate for married people (P=0.0142) and for city dwellers (P=0.0029), as well. After the death of Kim Gwang Seok, there was a significant increase of suicide rate for teenagers and people over 60 years of age (P=0.0301).
Finally, the suicidal trend of the general population, one to three months after the death of a celebrity, increases initially during the first two publicized months before it starts to slow down and eventually return to the normal national rate after three months.

Conclusion : It is thus safe to say that the copycat suicide of the general population following the death of celebrities does exist in Korea. This needs to be taken into consideration when dealing with the problem of suicide. As Korea tops the list for the largest suicide rate increase in the world, and suicide is now the fourth most frequent reason for the total number of deaths in this country, it is urgent to deal with this problem both socially and culturally. To effectively deal with this issue, there is a need for national debate in Korean society in order to highlight possible triggers, social and cultural barriers and measures to reduce or prevent suicides.
