As Ministry of Information and Communication(MIC) selected for one of new leading industries 10 years later, digital content industry is rapidly emerging in the world. Also it is a basis of digital economics, venture-type knowledge based industry, high value-added industry, and improving competitive power of other industries. The ripple effect is getting extended in the digital economy which the source of added value moves from material property to immaterial property. Among OECD countries, Korea seems to be positioned at competitive edge in IT industry. However it is cuased by IT manufacturing base, not IT services. In Korea, home broadband service is widely used at the rate of 75% which is highest in the world. But the current status of domestic digital content industry doesn’t seem to be good. Korea maket is still small. Revenue relies on specific content market only. Furthermore of it, the gap of skills between other leading countries and Korea is severe. So the aggressive policy for growing it is urgent.So far, the strategic approachs of domestic IT industry was aiming to establish the infrastructure to take off to leading country. But we should concentrate to raise the application value of contents from now on.This study aims to introduce basic charateristics and future direction of digital content industry by reviewing its technical side and industrial trend. For foreign leading countries in IT area, their market status, support and policies are discussed, and the lessons are extracted for us from them. And it also looks at current position of domestic digital content industry. Finally it proposes the way and the policies to promote Korea to the leading country from the aspects of the government, the companies, and the consumers.
