Simple unimorph type electrostrictive (EP) polymer actuators were prepared using urethanes and a acrylic rubber as EP elastomers with compliant electrodes. The actuation characteristics of EP actuators were dependent on the material properties of elastomer such as dielectric constant and elastic modulus. With the increasing frequencies of applied AC electric field, the bending amplitude and maximum displacement of EP actuator decreased, which was due to the decrease in dielectric constant more than the decrease in elastic modulus. The effect of dielectric relaxation on the EP actuator was examined, and it was proposed that the contribution of the unrelaxed polymer chain segments restricted the actuation behavior of EP actuator.
