IT has been my sad duty to record the death in action of many young oarsmen and scullers whose names are familiar to all frequenters of Henley Regatta during recent years. As a contrast there has lately died, aged ninety-four, a competitor at the early regattas, Mr. Thomas Brooks Bumpsted, the first winner of the Diamond Sculls. The regatta was started in 1839, but it was not until 1844 that the race for the Diamond Sculls was instituted.
