The city of Pompeii was buried by showers of dust and cinders which fell during an eruption of Vesuvius in the year 79 of the Christian era.--Herculanecum, at the foot of the mountain, and near Pompeii, shared the same awful fate, but "was afterwards flooded with a river of hot water, which converted the whole mass into a solid rock of cement.
