The pavilion is a place that provides the pleasure and relaxation of being one with nature, and is an important cultural heritage. Pavilion culture has a long history in East Asia, with pavilions being built in places with beautiful scenery that people often visit.
Although Sokcho is a city with a short history of being promoted to a city, it has historical pavilions representing the region, such as Biseon-pavilion(秘仙亭) ‧Cheongcho-pavilion(靑草亭) and Chimsan-pavilion(浸山亭). The three pavilions were located around Cheongcho Lake(靑草湖), which has been recognized as a famous place since the Silla(新羅) Dynasty. Among these, the Biseon-pavilion, built on the Biseon-belvedere(秘仙臺) on the beach, has been in existence since before 1481 and has enjoyed great fame as a local landmark with national recognition.
The Biseon-Pavilion itself was beautiful, and many people visited it because it was located at a key point in the east coast transportation that had been used since the Silla Dynasty. When you climb up to the pavilion, you can enjoy the refreshing atmosphere of the mountains, sea, and lake at the same time, such as the East Sea, Seorak-Mountain(雪嶽山), and Cheongcho Lake at a glance, so it was praised by writers as a world of immortals, and its reputation spread widely.
Although the biseon-pavilion disappeared around the end of the 17th century, the biseon-belvedere continued to be recorded in geographical books compiled after that, and was also marked on old maps, maintaining a firm position as a famous local attraction known nationwide.
