hilosophy—Joseon Cheolhaksa (Vol. I) (1960), Joseon Cheolhaksa Gaeyo (1986), and Joseon Cheolhak Jeonsa 6 (2010)—in order to trace how the thought of the three Northern Learning (Bukhak) scholars (Damhon, Yeonam, and Chojŏng) has been reconfigured in accordance with the shifting methodological orientations of each work. These three texts embody distinct ideological frameworks—Marxist-Leninist materialism, Juche ideology centered on autonomy, and the people-centered Juche philosophy—and collectively illustrate the methodological transformation in North Korean historiography of philosophy.
The analysis shows that Joseon Cheolhaksa (Vol. I) characterizes the three Bukhak thinkers as progressive intellectuals who dismantled feudal idealism and advanced social critique grounded in a materialist worldview. Joseon Cheolhaksa Gaeyo reinterprets them, while maintaining a materialist orientation, as Enlightenment-style reformers who fostered the autonomous awakening of the people. In contrast, Joseon Cheolhak Jeonsa 6 arranges Damhon, Yeonam, and Chojŏng respectively as historical embodiments of autonomy, creativity, and consciousness, thereby reconstructing them as stages in the gradual formation and development of a Juche-oriented conception of the human subject within the tradition of Korean intellectual history.
Through this comparative analysis, the study argues that North Korean historiography of philosophy is not a neutral narration of intellectual heritage, but rather an interpretive strategy that structurally repositions the meaning of the same thinkers in accordance with shifts in dominant ideological methodology. By offering a diachronic and structural analysis of North Korean interpretations of the Bukhak school, this study provides an analytical framework for comparative research on South and North Korean historiography of philosophy.
