Transient synovitis of hip is self-limiting disease and its cause is not certain. Previously, its diagnosis depend on positive physical findings and bulgins shadow of distended hip joint capsule in plain x-ray. Aspiration was performed frequently as confirmative diagnostic procedure and as decompressive means. Recently, ultrasonography was introduced in diagnostic study of hip joint pathology, especially in children's hip. Authors performed ultrasonography in 49 cases of suspicious transient synovitis of hip on clinical examination from Aug. 1989 to Dec. 1990. Authors performed ultrasonography serially with interval of several days until complete disappearance of clinical symptoms and signs.
The results were as follows ;
1. Authors' criteria of abnormal effusion was more than 1.5mm difference of distance between femoral head and joint capsule, 71%(35 cases) were positive and mean difference was 2.2mm.
2. Distance between femoral head and joint capsule was decreased from 7.1mm (initial) to 4.1mm(last) in positive group(mean=3mm).
3. In positive group, the distance between the normal side and affected side became similar on 10 days(mean) after symptom onset.
4. In needed 11 days(mean) in sono positive group and 6.8 days(mean) in sono negative group for complete disappearance of clinical symptoms and signs.
