‘몸’과 ‘세계’의 개념으로 본 서도호의 <집> 시리즈 : 노장(老莊)의 심신일원적(心身一元的) 몸과 일원론(一元論) 사상을 중심으로 = Doho Suh's Home series from the perspective of the concepts of ‘body’ and ‘world’ : Focusing on the mind-body unity and monism of Taoist Thought

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 노장(老莊)철학적 시각에서 서도호(1962~ )의 대표 연작인 <집> 시리즈를 ‘몸’과 ‘세계’의 개념으로 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 서도호의 예술세계에 관한 선행 연구 및 비평들은 디아스포라(diaspora), 문화적 정체성, 공동체의 개념과 관련한 비평과 연구들이 대다수이며, 이는 서양의 미술사와 철학적 시각에서 이루어진 연구들이라고 볼 수 있다. 이와 같은 상황을 고려하여, 기존의 연구 시각에서 벗어나 동양의 노장철학 시각에서 서도호의 작품세계를 고찰하였고, 이를 통해 동양철학과 한국 현대미술 관계의 지평을 넓히고, 현대미술을 이해하기 위한 예술철학적 시각을 확장하고자 하였다.
이 연구에서 서도호의 <집> 연작은 ‘장소 특정적 미술(site-specific art)’로 간주하며, 장소 특정적 미술은 몸과 장소(세계)의 관계가 중심이 되는 미술로 규정하여 연구를 진행하였다. 장소 특정적 미술의 체험에서 감상자의 몸은 심신이원적(心身二元的), 즉 육체와 정신으로 각각 분리되는 존재가 아니며, 정신적인 측면 및 물리적인 측면 양쪽 모두의 특성을 가진 살아있는 하나의 생명체인 ‘심신일원적(心身一元的) 존재’로 간주된다. 이러한 맥락에서, 노장철학의 심신일원적 몸과 일원론(一元論)에 관한 사상을 기반으로 서도호의 예술관에서 몸과 세계를 둘러싼 사상에 대하여 논의하였고, 이를 토대로 하여 <집> 연작 작품들을 살펴보며 그의 예술세계에 관한 해석을 제시하였다.
노장철학에 있어 몸은 인간 삶의 핵심 존재이자 세계와 하나로 연결되는 매개체이며, 서도호의 예술세계에서도 핵심 사안이자 세계 및 타자와 하나가 되는 중심 매개체이다. 서도호에게 있어서 <집>은 그의 몸과 그것의 기억 및 경험의 표상이자 몸의 확장이다. 서도호 <집>의 이동성과 가변성은 동양의 병풍이나 족자의 현대적 변용이라고 볼 수 있으며, 그의 <집>의 반투명성은 공간과 감상자와의 관계를 더욱 연계하도록 만드는데, 이를 장자식의 물질과 비물질 공간개념과 물아일체 사상으로 이해해 볼 수 있었다. 또한, 서도호가 그의 설치작품과 주변 환경 및 공간 그리고 관람자를 하나로 연결하려는 지향성을 노장철학의 일원적 사유의 방식으로 고찰해 보았다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to examine Home, Doho Suh(1962~ )’s representative series, from the perspective of Taoist thought focusing on the concepts of ‘body’ and ‘world’. Most of the previous studies on Suh’s artworks are related to the concepts of diaspora, cultural identity and community ideology. These studies have been conducted from the perspective of Western art history and philosophy. Considering this situation, in order to move away from the existing research perspective, Suh’s artworks and thoughts are examined through the perspective of Taoist thought from Eastern philosophy. Through this attempt, this paper tries to broaden the relationship between Eastern philosophy and Korean contemporary art, and expand the perspective of art philosophy for understanding contemporary art.
In this study, Suh’s Home series is considered as ‘site-specific art’, and this paper is conducted by defining site-specific art as an artwork, which focuses on the relationship between the body and the place(the world). In the experience of site-specific art, the body of the viewer cannot be explained by the mind-body dualism, however can be contemplated by the mind-body unity. In this sense, based on the ideas of the mind-body unity and monism in Taoist thought, it discusses the ideas about the body and the world in Suh’s artworks. With this idea, through looking at the artworks of the Home series, I present the interpretation of his artworks and thoughts.
In Taoist philosophy, the body is the core existence of human life and a medium, which connects to the world. In Suh’s artworks, the body is also a core issue and the central medium, which becomes one with the world and others. For Suh, Home is a representation of his body and its memories and experiences, as well as an extension of his body. The mobility and variability of Suh’s Home can be seen as a contemporary transformation of Eastern folding screens or hanging scrolls. Also the translucency of his Home makes the relationship between space and viewers more connected, which can be understood in terms of Zhuangzi’s concept of material and immaterial spaces, and ​​the unity of things and nature. In addition, Suh’s tendency to connect his installations with the surrounding environment, space and viewers as one, can be examined in the monistic way of Taoist philosophy.
