초등 학생의 영어 의사 소통 능력 함양을 위한 교수 방안 연구 : 게임 활동을 중심으로 = (A) study on improving english communicative competence for elementary school students : Emphasis on game activities

국문 초록 (Abstract)

초등 학교에서의 영어 교육의 목적은 영어의 기본적인 의사 소통 능력을 향상시키는 것이다. 그래서, 이 논문의 목적으로 초등 학생의 의사 소통 능력을 함양시키는 효과적인 교수 방법들을 제시하고 있다. 여기에서 의사 소통 능력이란, 실제 상황에서 원어민과 적절하게 의사 전달을 할 수 있는 능력을 말한다.
이 논문에서 연구 대상이 된 초등 학교 4학년에게는 음성 언어 중심으로 지도를 하고, 수업 시간에 다양한 게임을 활용하여 활동적인 수업이 되도록 유도하였다. 또한 게임에 여러 가지 교수법들을 적용시켜 학생들의 의사 소통 능력을 향상시키는 방법을 모색하는데 주력하며 수업을 진행하였다.
의사 소통 능력을 증진시킬 수 있는 교수 방법으로 전신 반응 교수법, 의사 소통 언어 교수법 등과 다양한 게임들이 이 논문에서 제시되고 있는데, 이러한 것들은 초등 학생들에게 커다란 효과를 발휘했다. 특히 전선 반응 교수법은 연구한 바와 같이, 초등 학교 4학년 학생들에게 아주 적절하고 효과적인 교수 방법이라는 것을 알 수 있었다.
다양하고 흥미 있는 게임 활동을 이용한 교수 기법은 학생들의 관심을 유발시켰고, 또한 영어를 배우려는 욕구를 계속 지속시킬 수 있음을 관찰할 수 있었다. 어린이들은 게임을 하면서 영어 공부하는 것을 매우 즐겨했으며 주변의 사물이나 사람, 상황 등에 대해 강한 호기심과 관심을 가지고 있었다.
영어 교육의 목적은 듣고 말하고 읽고 쓰는 능력을 기르는 것이다. 이런 목적을 달성하기 위해 초등 영어 교사들은 학생들과 함께 수업 활동에 적극 참여하고, 영어 교실에서 학습 조언자, 조정자로서의 역할을 수행해야 한다. 또한 학생들의 흥미를 유발하고 그들의 수준에 적절한 학습 자료를 준비해야 하며, 끝임 없이 훌륭한 교수 방법을 개발해내고 늘 수업 준비를 철저히 해야 한다.
결론적으로 말해서, 초등 영어 교사들은 학생들이 형식보다는 의미에 관심을 갖도록 유도해야 하며, 수업 시간에 어법보다는 언어의 실제 사용에, 문장의 구조보다는 담화에, 정확성보다는 유창성에 초점을 두고 영어 교육에 임하는 자세가 필요하다. 학생들의 의사 소통 능력을 향상시키기 위해 재미있는 게임을 수업에 활용한다면 학습 효과를 크게 높일 수 있다. 게임을 적용할 때는 학생들의 수준에 맞는 게임 선택과 교사의 철저한 수업 준비가 이루어져야 한다. 게임 활동을 적용한 수업은 다양성을 부여하므로 학습자의 흥미를 자극하여 영어 수업 시간을 보다 더 흥미롭고 즐거운 시간으로 느끼게 해줄 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The aim of English education in elementary schools is to improve the basic communicative competence of English. The purpose of this paper is to propose effective teaching methods to improve communicative abilities of elementary school students. Communicative competence is the ability to communicate with native speakers appropriately in real situations.
The objective of this study was to teach 4th graders while stressing phonetic language and to lead an active English class using various and interesting games.
Total Physical Response, Communicative Language Teaching and various games which are presented in this paper as the methods aiming to increase the communicative competence had great effects on elementary school students. Especially, Total Physical Response was a teaching method which was appropriate and effective for 4th graders in elementary schools.
The teaching method, through various and interesting game activities, aroused the interest of the students and maintained their desire to learn English. Children enjoyed studying English by playing games, and had very strong curiosity and interest in objects, people and situations around them.
The purpose of English education is to learn four communicative functions, that is, listening, speaking, reading and writing. To achieve this purpose, the English teacher should be a participant with students, a learning counselor, and a controller in the English classroom. The learning substances and materials prepared by a teacher should be interesting to the students and suitable for the students' level. Therefore, English teachers should develop good teaching methods consistently and prepare for English class thoroughly.
In conclusion, English teachers in elementary schools should encourage students to have more interest in the meaning than the form, and to emphasize the use of language rather than usage, discourse rather than sentence structures, and fluency rather than accuracy. If English teachers use interesting games in class in order to improve students' communicative competence, the effect of learning can be great. When teachers use games, they should choose games which are appropriate to learners' level and prepare for the games completely. The English class in which game activities are applied has variety and stimulates the learners' interest. Therefore, games make the learners feel that the English class is a more exciting and enjoyable time.
