Side-to-side portacaval shunt was constructed in 5 normal mongrel dogs, and the author observed the changes of protal and inferior vena caval pressures, liver function tests, blood nitrogens, hematologic values, histopathological findings of shunt stoma and liver tissues.
The significant changes are as follows:
1. Portal pressures were decreased markedly and inferior vena caval pressures were decreased slightly.
2. In liver function tests, impairment of hepatic function was observed-serum globulin, indirect bilirubin, serum cholesterol, serum transaminases, alkaline phosphatase were increased and serum albumin was decreased and A/G ratio was reversed.
3. WBC and hematocrit and platelets were decreased.
4. The shunt stomata were stenosed partially due to fibrosis and foreign body granuloma.
5. Histopathological changes of the liver were degenerations of hepatic cells, disarrays of hepatic cell cords, and venous congestion.
