Since long ago, paintings in the East made use of margin in order to emphasize a transcendental spiritual world. Margin contains much more meaning than expressed space, and sometimes can be used as the sole purpose of a work by itself. While margins refer to parts that are not drawn, they are full of vividness and vitality, and shows the significance of the artwork. The study method of this paper is to study the significance of margin as an Eastern value in media art. First, it will discuss margin expressed in Eastern painting as a psychological and emotional concept, and then analyze painting in the past which emphasize margin, as well as modern paintings which express the spirit of margin. Also, this paper also seeks to comprehensively identify Western paintings which contain the spirit of Eastern margin. Next, it investigates artworks that contain restrained temporality, which goes hand in hand with the spirit of Eastern margin in media art, and analyzes the functions, artistic expressions, and emotions in the works. It will be possible to make conceptual definition of margin in media art by comparing and analyzing the production methods and expressions of media art works which intentionally manipulate margin and slow down time in Eastern paintings, or those which utilize pause technique. While utilization of margins in the East have various meanings, this paper seeks to conduct research by relating emotion, the aesthetic margin, with media art. Through this, it will be possible to identify and make reflections on points which can overlap margin of Eastern paintings, a traditional technique, and retrained temporality of media art. Through the studies that have mentioned previously, the paper seeks to emphasize that media art, which utilizes temporal expression where time passes slowly, or paused screens, have close associations with the spirit of Margin in Eastern paintings, and to enhance the understanding on the importance of margin.
