The matters of sanctuary for temple Tong-Do, which is the oldest sacred ground of the Buddhism of Korea, and the main branch of the Buddhism of Korea, are being discussed in the places to advocate conservation of nature and are the historic mission for the succession to a national culture.
If we think over before giving our answer, we cannot refrain from acknowledging the actual circumstances the old temples of our country imbued with the unsensing national spirit have been changed into the resources of a tourist resourt and fallen into a place of amusement.
Though it oges without saying the primary responsibility for this fact consists in the authorities concerned which has led the development of this area. I cannot refrain from pointing out the tolerable responsibility of a Buddhist Temple side that has pursued its exigent profits.
Though it seems very tate, it is worthy of being praised that a recent tendency that a sacred ground should be protected as the Buddhism of the defense of the fatherland and a place of education.
In this manuscript the bluepoints which I present there for the future of the concerning area of Tong-Do, with recognition of the importance of changing into a sanctuary, are as follows:
1. Temple Tong-Do, which is one of the major three temples of Korea and the main branch of the Buddhism of Korea can be stood comparison with the highest sacred ground in the Buddhist temples of Korea and is conveniently located in surrounging with the historied Buddhist Temples, such as Temple suck-Nam, Temple Nae-won, Temple Pyo-chung and so on in circumference.
2. The excellent potographic features based upon the theory of the five elements of the male and female principles, the geographical location, and the beautiful natural sights have increased its a sacred feeling.
3. The epochal changes the Buddhist temples are to be more sacred, require positive action to satisfy the function as the sight-seeing places of cultural inheritances and the places of civilizing people.
4. Because of the fact that the success of protecting the sacred ground depends upon the buffer that reduces impacts from the outside to the minimum, it is necessary that the part of a Buddhist Temple has to cope with diffeculties by the positive and active attitudes.
5. It is not until the sanctuary of the Buddhist temple is put to practical use as the educational places of the national spirit based upon the Buddhism of the defense of the fatherland that is more important.
In order to accomplish these facts the part of Buddist Temple should take an active interest in civilizing society and strengthening the propagation of the audiovisual education.
