간화선: 마음을 밝히는 몸의 철학 = Ganhwa Seon: A Somatic Philosophy to Illuminate the Mind

국문 초록 (Abstract)

간화선에서 몸은 어떠한 의미로 마음과 관계맺음을 할까? 수행을 하는 사람이라면, 몸과 그 몸을 토대로 하는 마음에 관심이 많다. 개인 수행에 집중하게 하는 초기유식 섭대승론과 간화선 전통을 연결해 보려는 시도 역시 이러한 맥락 속에 있다. 서양철학에서 몸에 관련된 논의를 함께 거론하려는 것도 간화선을 이해하려는 다른 방법의 제시이다. 참선은 우리에게 근사한 세계를 연다. 화두의 세계이며 몸의 세계이다. 의심이라는 커다란 이슈를 품고 마음을 들여다보고 틀어잡으면서 그것에 용맹정진, 간절함을 가지고 온 힘을 기울이는 경험은 불교도들에게 필수적인 코스가 되었다.
수행전통은 사사로움과 은폐성으로 인해, 마음과 몸의 일임에도 불구하고 그 세세한 여정과 궁극으로 나아감을 알아차리기는 어렵다. 보편화하거나 대중적으로 공유하려면, 언어를 통해야하는 수고스러움이 있다. 내면세계 속에서 집중하는 것은 외부의 일상에 지대한 영향을 미친다. 개인만의 희열에 머물기보다는 공동체에 집중할 수밖에 없음을 강조하는 것은, 수행이 마음을 향해 있지만 그것은 자신의 몸이 세상과 어떻게 작용하고 영향을 주고받는지 알게함이다. 초기유식과 간화선은 수행을 위한 방법론으로 몸에 관련하여 텍스트와 현실세계에서 교류가 있는 편이지만, 서양철학에서 몸에 관련된 언급들은 설명서 역할에 머문다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

For Ganhwa practitioners, what is the relationship between body and mind, and what is the meaning of this relationship? In terms of the body, and the mind that has the body as its means of expression, I will connect the practice tradition of Ganhwa Seon and the She dasheng lun (Mah āy āna sa ṃgrahaśāstra) of the early Consciousness-Only School which emphasized personal training. I will also present some body-related discussions based on Western philosophy as another way of understanding Ganhwa Seon. Seon reveals to its practitioners a wonderful world, a realm of hwadu and body. Embracing the great issue called “doubt,”practitioners look into and focus their minds to maintain undaunted practice. This meditation experience, which involves fervent exertion of their whole being, has been established as essential for most Korean Buddhists. However, it is difficult to maintain awareness in this meditative state partly due to its private and obscure nature, despite it being a matter of body and mind. To make it more universal or to share it with the public entails the trouble of using some language. To concentrate one’s consciousness immersed in the inner world greatly affects the daily life of the outer world. I emphasize that Ganhwa Seon practitioners should concentrate on the community rather than maintaining a state of personal bliss because they should understand how their body interacts with and influences the world, regardless of their Seon practice being focused on their minds. I think the ultimate purpose of the practice theory of both Ganhwa Seon and the early Consciousness-Only School lies in this. Both the early Consciousness-Only School and Ganhwa Seon seem to have some degree of connection between their texts and the real world in relation to the body as part of their practice methodology. I employed the body-related discussions based on Western philosophy function as an instruction manual.
