서구 차크라 체계의 형성 과정 고찰-리드베터(C. W. Leadbeater)의 The Chakras(『차크라』)를 중심으로- = The Study on The Formation Process of The Western Chakra System : Focusing on C.W. Leadbeater’s the Chakras

What was thought to be an Indian tradition is often a variation formed under the influence of Western esotericism or 19th century occult. This paper examines the initial process of forming the Western Chakra system under the influence of the occultism of the Theosophical Society when the concept of Chakra originated from Tantrism and Indian traditional Haṭha Yoga was introduced to the West for the first time. Through this, it was revealed that the concept of chakra in modern yoga, which has been misunderstood as a same thing with an Indian tradition, was actually formed by being greatly influenced by the occultism of the the Theosophical Society since the end of the 19th century.
To this end, first of all, the process of internalizing Chakra, which was originally an external element of the early Tantra ritual, into the human body for the sake of meditation through Kaula’s reform after the 8th century was briefly examined. Next, we examined the process of introducing Chakra’s concept to the West through The Theosophical Society in the late 19th century, and how it was explained by H.P. Blavatsky.
Finally, focusing on The Chakras, C. W Leadbeather’s book, who spread the Chakra concept widely to the Western public, the characteristics of his Chakra concept and its significance in the process of forming the Western Chakra system were examined.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

인도 전통이라고 생각했던 것이 사실은 서구 비교(秘敎, Esotericism)나 19세기 오컬트(Occult)의 영향을 받아 형성된 변형인 경우가 많다. 본 고는 인도 전통 요가의 하나인 하타요가와 탄트라 사상에서부터 발원한 차크라 개념이 서구 에 소개되면서 신지학회의 오컬티즘의 영향을 받아 서구 차크라 체계로 형성 되는 초기 과정을 고찰하였다. 이를 통해 인도 전통으로 알고 있던 현대요가의 차크라 개념이 사실은 19세기 말 이후 신지학회의 오컬티즘에 많은 영향을 받 아 형성된 것임을 밝혔다.
이를 위해 먼저 초기 탄트라 의례의 외적 요소였던 차크라가 8세기 이후 카 울라(Kaula)의 개혁을 통해 관상(觀想)을 위해 인체 속으로 내면화되어 6차크 라 체계로 형성되는 과정을 간략히 고찰했다. 그리고 다음으로 19세기 말 신 지학회(The Theosophical Society)를 통해 차크라의 개념이 서구에 소개되는 과 정과 이것이 블라바츠키(H.P. Blavatsky)에 의해 해설되는 과정을 살폈다. 그 리고 마지막으로 차크라 개념을 서구 대중에게 널리 확산시킨 리드베터(C. W Leadbeather)의 저술 『차크라( )』를 중심으로 그의 차크라 개념의 특징 과 서구 차크라 체계 형성 과정에서 그가 가지는 의의를 고찰했다.
