한국성결교회 이명직 목사의 구약성서 예언서의 해석 원리 -이사야서를 중심으로 = Hermeneutic Principles of Rev. Myung-Jik Lee of Korean Evangelical Holiness Church in the Prophetic Literature: Focused on Isaiah

Korean Evangelical Holiness Church (KEHC), which was founded in 1910, has made considerable efforts to develop biblical interpretation. As the result of such efforts, KEHC has left an inheritance of an expansive library of sources of biblical interpretation. Reverend Myung-Jik Lee was particularly instrumental in building this inheritance through his early involvement in biblical interpretation at the initial stage of KEHC`s history. Yet his biblical materials were scattered all over the place, which made studying his materials in a systematic fashion incredibly difficult. The recent publication of the collection of his materials has made it possible for us to thoroughly analyze Lee`s works. This study`s purpose is to investigate the biblical principles that Lee relied on. Lee wrote over two thousand pages on the interpretation of the Old Testament. As it is impossible to analyze all of Lee`s works, this study specifically focuses on what he wrote for Living Waters between 1925 and 1937 for our analysis of the book of Isaiah. Namely, our analysis of Lee`s works attempts to find out on what principles he rested his interpretation of Isaiah. Given that biblical interpretation cannot be bifurcated from the writer`s social situation, the present writer first examined the social situation between 1925 and 1937 when Lee had written the analysis on the book of Isaiah. Lee`s commentary on Isaiah reflected the oppressive and gloomy situation during the Japanese colonial period. Then the present writer classified the whole book of Isaiah into six principles for interpretation and interpreted the whole text of Isaiah according to the principles in connection with the social context. Of course, the six interpretive principles are not absolutely distinctive, but were distinguished for hermeneutic convenience. Finally, this study showed why Lee`s biblical interpretation is closely related to the church`s religious tradition which he had inherited. Even before this study, there has been several attempts to investigate Lee`s biblical interpretive principles. Yet such attempts merely dwelled on partial analysis due to the limited availability of his biblical materials. The value of this study first of all lies in looking at the book of Isaiah as whole for the purpose of analyzing Lee`s biblical interpretation. Secondly, this study revealed through his commentary on Isaiah his interpretive principles in a systematic way. In addition, this study has reconfirmed Lee`s interpretive principles as those that are rooted in the religious origins of KEHC.
