한국의 사회학 연구영역에서의 근거이론의 활용 방법과 전개, 그리고 향후 방향의 모색: 『한국사회학』 게재논문을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

근거이론은 기존 질적 연구방법의 약점을 보완할 수 있다고 평가되어 그 위상이 높아졌으며, 인기를 모아왔다. 이러한 점에서 한국의 사회과학계도 예외가 아니다. 사회복지학, 행정학, 교육학 등의 동향을 살펴보면, 근거이론을 활용한 연구가 질적 연구 패러다임의 대다수를 차지한다. 한편, 이들 연구들을 보면, 이전에는 스트라우스와 코빈(Strauss and Corbin)의 근거이론 방법론을 중심으로 한 연구가 대부분이었으나, 2010년대 들어서 근거이론의 다양한 논의를 반영한 연구들이 증가하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 또한 근거이론의 다양한 논쟁을 소개하는 작업과 방법론에 대한 논의도 활발한 편이다. 이러한 사회과학계 전반의 추세와는 달리 한국 사회학계에서는 근거이론에 대한 소개와 활용이 미미했다. 물론, 근거이론의 분석방법 및 존재론적, 인식론적 입장에 대한 논란도 많고 비판도 많다. 그러나 근거이론이 가지고 있는 방법론적 장점도 분명이 있기 때문에 이 연구에서는 근거이론에 대한 논의를 함으로써, 사회학 영역의 질적 연구방법 논의의 진전을 시도하고자 했다. 이러한 점에서 이 연구에서는 <한국사회학회지>를 중심으로 사회학계의 근거이론 활용을 살펴보았다. 첫째, 근거이론을 활용한 연구가 다른 사회과학 영역에 비해 절대적으로 부족하다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 사회학계에서 근거이론은 분석적 절차를 제공하는 방법(method)으로만 이해되고, 이론을 형성하기 위한 패러다임을 제시하는 방법론(methodology)으로 이해하고자 하는 논의는 별로 없었다. 셋째, 한국의 사회학계에서는 스트라우스와 코빈의 연구만이 독점적으로 활용되고 있는 상태이며, 근거이론의 다른 논쟁들에 대한 논의가 별로 소개되고 있지 않다. 이상의 점들을 살펴 볼 때, 근거이론 활용을 한 연구들이 좀 더 활발해지고, 방법론적 논의가 진전된다면 사회학 영역에서의 질적 연구 방법론 논의에 발전이 있을 것이라는 점을 지적하고자 한다. 마지막으로 이 연구에서는 편수는 적지만, 사회학계에서 근거이론을 활용한 연구를 심층 분석함으로써, 사회학 영역에서 가능한 근거이론 활용 방향을 제시하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Grounded theory has dominated the qualitative research in Korea since it was considered to be rather an effective and useful method that can overcome what is previously known as weakness of qualitative research methods. There has been explosively rapid increase in the use of grounded theory in the qualitative research of social sciences in Korea such as social welfare, public administration or gerontology. There used to be a propensity to adopt grounded theory by Strauss and Corbin(1990); however, entering the 2010s, social science studies applying other grounded theory methods done by scholars such as Charmaz or Rennie, have also emerged and flourished. Grounded theory has not been debated much in qualitative research of Korean Sociology as in other social divisions. This study explored the trend, limits and implications of relatively underestimated grounded theory research in Sociology, reviewing the articles adopting grounded theory published in <Korean Journal of Sociology> from 1999 to 2016. The findings are as follows: 1) That there is a scant amount of grounded theory studies in the field of Korean Sociology, which suggests that ground theory research quality in Sociology may be far left behind; 2) grounded theory is considered to be as a procedure to analyze data rather than as a methodological research approach/paradigm for a substantive-level theory; 3) Grounded theory approach by Strauss and Corbin has exclusively dominated over the years, curtailing the methodological debates regarding post-Strauss and Corbin. This study aimed to ignite the overall discussions of qualitative research by shedding lights on grounded theory, which has been underestimated and less utilized for qualitative research in Korean Sociology.
