The purpose of this study is to set up some evaluative criteria for basic vocabularies selected by frequency, range, availability, coverage and learnability which W.F.Mackey suggested in 1965.
Vocabulary selection and the establishment of vocabulary lists for various purposes have been attempted and their validity has been discussed in language teaching. It is certain that the need for valid word lists continues to exist in the field of lexical syllabus.
So, we language teachers should give heed to appropriate selection of vocabulary, and such selection must be interpreted and evaluated.
In this study I introduced the concept of vocabulary unclearity as evaluative criteria based on some principles underlying the organization of the vocabulary.
Competent users of a language generally have recourse to sets of unclear vocabulary in specific contexts such as talking to children or foreigners, writing summaries, etc. Nuclear items might be those having a common semantic feature, or the ability to be linked with other items, or have easily identifiable antonyms. They could also be identified in terms of their neutrality or general in meaning, or of an informal rather than a formal nature.
Purely linguistic criteria are insufficient to determine basic vocabulary. In conclusion, I suggest that frequency, range, availability, coverage and learnability should be taken as extralinguistic methods for vocabulary selections and that vocabulary unclearity should be taken as pure lingustic criteria for vocabularies selected by extralinguistic methods.
