몸짓기반 게임 활동을 통한 초등영어의 리듬과 강세 연구 = A Study of Rhythm and Stress through Motion-based Game Activities for Elementary English Education

This study aims to find out the effects of motion-based game activities (clapping & jumping) on the improvement of elementary school students' English rhythm and stress. In order to investigate the study, students were grouped into two: a motion-based game group and a text-based communicative group. Variability indices of syllables were acoustically measures to calculate the rhythm and stress of the students while two native speakers of English participated in evaluating the data simultaneously. The results show that motion game activities as well as text-based communicative activities could have positive effects on improving students' English rhythm and stress, In particular, this study carried out an objective rhythmic calculation of utterances using acoustic measurements as well as perceptual evaluation of native speakers. Based on observation and group interview data, the results implies that English teachers of elementary school, by using motion-based game activities, could help their students actively participate in listening and speaking practices and improve their English skills of rhythm and stress.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구의 목적은 초등학생을 대상으로 초분절음에 대한 영어 발음교육차원으로 몸짓 게임 활동(리듬에 맞추어 손뼉 치기, 점프 하기 등)을 통하여 영어의 리듬과 강세의 변화를 알아보고, 그 효과를 검증하기 위한 것이다. 초등학교 학급 두 개 반을 무작위로 선정하여, 연구 대상자 그룹을 실험집단 즉, 몸짓 게임 활동을 통한 영어의 리듬과 강세 수업 적용대상과 비교집단 즉, 영어교과서를 이용하여 듣고 따라 말하는 일반적인 수업 적용대상으로 구분하였다. 실험집단과 비교집단의 녹음내용을 분석하기위해 리듬과 강세 학습 전·후의 학습자 발화 리듬을 음성분석 프로그램(PRAAT 6.0)을 통하여 측정하고, 객관적인 리듬 지수의 변화를 분석하였다. 또한 이 발화녹음을 토대로 두 명의 원어민의 주관적인 청취 평가 점수도 반영하여 보조적으로 활용하였다. 연구 결과, 실험반과 비교반의 평균값이 수치상으로는 근소한 차이를 보이긴 하지만 통계적으로 유의미한 차이는 없는 것으로 판명되었고, 비록 몸짓기반 게임을 활동했던 실험반이 약간 우위를 차지했지만, 각 수업방법 모두 연구수업 이전에 비해 영어학습에 교육적인 효과가 어느 정도 나타났다. 통계적 결과로서는 비록 몸짓기반 게임 활동이 기존의 방식에 비해 영어의 리듬과 강세교육에 더욱 우월하다는 점을 입증하지 못했지만, 질적 연구의 방법인 참여자 관찰과 인터뷰를 통하여 학생들의 흥미와 자신감의 향상정도를 확인할 수 있었다. 연구자는 그 주제를 연구 질문에 따라 1) 참여자 중심의 과업수행과 흥미정도 2) 박수와 외침을 통한 자신감 표출 3) 리듬을 통한 영어듣기와 말하기 실력 향상 4) 단어와 문장의 이미지 연상과 영어의 음악성(musicality)으로 구분하여 논의하였다. 결론적으로, 몸짓기반의 게임 활동은 교사의 적절한 활용을 통하여 학생들의 자발성과 적극성 그리고 몰입감을 유도할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 영어의 리듬감과 강세의 향상에 도움을 줄 수 있다는 가능성을 보여주었다.
