      This study investigates “contemplation and material practice,” an ingenious way of representing history, by focusing on Li Songsong’s works. Li Songsong’s works constitute the successor generation of Beijing’s 798 Art Zone, symbolizing contemporary Chinese art. Post the cultural revolution, Chinese art expanded as well as became internationalized in the art market at the same time. Since 2010, the rise of China in earnest and the rapid commercialization of the Chinese art market have led to further upheaval in the 798 Art Zone. LiSongsong’ s works, representative of the successor generation, are characteristic in that they capture the abstraction and narrative of a scene of history at the same time by paying attention to the scenes of modern Chinese history as the subject of “Chinese motifs.” By focusing on the keywords of contemplation and materialistic practice, this paper attempts to confirm Li Songsong’s driving force, which helps him in continuing to focus on the important scenes of Chinese modern history, while maintaining a certain distance between his work and reality. In particular, he leads viewers to wander around the work for a long time via the application of oil painting grid work method. In addition, the oil painting brushstrokes, wherein the traces of his labor remain intact, enable viewers to reconstruct a scene of history on their own. Li Songsong’s work can be said to be an aesthetic and political practice in the sense that it allows viewers to enter historical time and space.

      This study investigates “contemplation and material practice,” an ingenious way of representing history, by focusing on Li Songsong’s works. Li Songsong’s works constitute the successor generation of Beijing’s 798 Art Zone, symbolizing contemporary Chinese art. Post the cultural revolution, Chinese art expanded as well as became internationalized in the art market at the same time.
