Today, even if the environment of digital typography is getting better, it is a fact that the fundamental typographic problems still have depended on the hand of trained typographers such as graphic designers, editorial designers and typographers. For example, the appropriate and even spacing between letters has widely regarded as typographer's sensory domain. By quantitatively calculating the space between letters, this research intend to suggest a solution in terms of the equalized letter spacing which is one of the typographic problems. First of all, type body vertically divided into four part in order to execute a detailed typographic analysis. This compares with two part of type body in the advanced studies of Alan and Rita Greer, Jinpyeong Kim and Yongje Lee. Also, a new concept to define the space between letters as '닿공간' is proposed. The main font for this study is NanumGothic typeface which have been widely disseminated for free because that the font is close to the original structure of letterform in Hangeul. Finally, the 216 areas between letters which are made by 6 types of Korean letterforms are calculated and analysed. As a result in NanumGothic typeface syllable blocks, the area of a horizontal syllable block of C1 + V and a vertical syllable block of C1 + V is the biggest whereas the area of the opposite case is the smallest. Therefore, root cause is believed that both sidebearing value of a vertical syllable block of C1 + V is the biggest and the right sidebearing value of a horizontal syllable block of C1 + V is the biggest.
